Diabetes rate DOUBLES in last 10 years

http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSTRE49T7JJ20081030

"Newly diagnosed cases of diabetes rose to 9.1 per 1,000 people annually between 2005 to 2007, up from 4.8 per 1,000 from 1995 to 1997, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said."

Editorial...
More proof that many parts of the 'merrcan way of life are unsustainable. too much fast food, processed food, big gulps, high fructose corn syrup, too many morbidly obese people, too many fat kids... this IS preventable.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go out and buy Halloween candy for the neighborhood kids

Just try and hand out apples . . . parents would be up all night looking for the shards of metal.

I was watching the tube last evening and the only commercials that were on where 1- Food commercials 2- Car commercials and 3- My all time favorite medicine commercials for upset stomach, diabetes and anxiety. With messages like this coming thru the Almighty Altar(sp) is it any wonder its on the rise?

My doctor says that part of it is that the goalposts have been moved. The new standards for blood sugar level are more stringent, and more folks will be classified as borderline or 'pre diabetic'.

I was at that state last year, lost 10 pounds [and kept them off] and this year I'm on the right side of the borderline.

I was just in a meeting here at work where they said that diabetes is very much linked to obesity and most of it can be eliminated with proper dieting or various bypass surgeries for the morbidly obese (BMI over 40).

The data they showed was astonishing how fast it cleared up after surgery!

Its always been that way, but big pharma doesn't want you to know. There was a pretty good 60 minutes story on an 80 year old MD who has been preaching this for years and has been all but shunned by the medical community (the story has been posted here, iirc).

Guess poppin' pills is easier than putting down that bag o' chips and a milkshake.

A neighbor up the street used to own a deli. He was a big man. Now, he's a shadow of his former self riding around the neighborhood on his electric cart with one leg. I reckon Jack's in his mid 50's.

You are what you eat.

30 year type 1 diabetic here.

Rise in type 2 is partially piss-poor diet and exercise habits and partially better detection. Plenty of folks died young from undiagnosis for many years...

I've made a good living off "big pharma" myself and the wife represents GSK and AHP.

My wife contacted this disease 10 yr ago. for her it was hereditary. She is vegatarian, does not eat fast food or snaks and candy. It hit her(and I) like a ton of lead. She went thru 2 yr of depression while coming to grips with the impact of having "The sugar" after 4 yr of monitering her diet, and having her dr. prescribe med after med ,I became supisious that he was over-medicating her and voiced my dis-approval. When her med list grew to 22 ,I put my foot down and ,she finally agreed to tell the doc that she wanted to go on insulin. When she went to the pharmacy to get the script for the insulin, guess what> IT was FREE!. We both learned alot that day in terms of drs, prescribing too many medications. She now injects herself once a day, watches her calories and gets as much excersise as possible, has her #, under control and only has half of the meds she did 7 trs ago. I should also note that spouses are affected by this disease. It is tough watching someone you love disentegrating piece by piece, and feel there should be more for spouses in terms of support groups etc... That is my 2 cents.

Somebody has to fund the medical community.

This is the main reason I went on the Atkins diet a few years ago. So many of my friends and co-workers were being diagnosed with adult-onset diabetes, that it really scared me. I wanted to change my eating habits and reduce my risk of ending up that way. I'm all for PRE-vention over INTER-vention.

Suger is in everything. I'm trying to cut out soda, but my problem is I really, really like soda. So whats been working pretty good for me recently is always carrying around a water bottle. That way I'm never thirsty and won't stop and grab a Coke.
