New ASUS 1000 Netbook

Ordered Friday, arrived today. This is a cool little device - a mini laptop that runs linux with 40GB solid state drive, 1.6GHz Intel processor, 7-8 hour battery life, weighs about 2.5 pounds. I had it up and connected to the network in about 15 minutes. This will be great for students or anyone else needing a compact very portable general purpose computer. Also runs XP.

They make a version with Winders XP, 1 gig RAM, 120 gig conventional HDD, sells for $380. I think I might just buy one this week.

With XP I might spring for the extra GB of RAM, though you can always add it later.

I always wanted a device that I can travel with that has enough battery power to run a DVD for the boys while on a plane, but could also do wifi internet so I can check emails and sales of my site.

I just got that one a few weeks ago at one of those seedy looking electronic shops in Chicago for $250. It works great.

Does "solid state drive" mean that it starts up as soon as you turn it on? That would be very useful to me. I hate having to wait for mine to get started. Paper is still a lot more useful to me for that reason. My pen works as soon as I pull it out of my pocket and uncap it.

JD - seedy electronics shop ? does it have a name you could repeat here ? My interest is piqued.

Dee8Go - Solid state HD's should have faster seek times than normal spinney platter hard drives, but there is a still a number of processor tasks required to start up a computer, so while it might be faster, it won't be instant. This is why Windoze invested the "stand by" and "hibernate" functionality (if they work...) for laptops.

It was near or on Halsted St. in the Pilsen district. A friend of mine has a warehouse there and he had one and took me to the shop. I will shoot him an email and find out the name and address. I say seedy--it could be legit, but it is one of those places that has thousands of mobile phones, cameras, phone cards, cigarettes ect and the owners wore a lot of bling and didn't speak english. It is new in box and I registered it when I got on line.

No, I don't mean it like that--it was some kind of asian high tech novelty shop. I think the first time I used it I logged on here.
