Eyes on three undecided U.S. Senate races

WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The long election season goes on for three U.S. Senate races and three House of Representatives races, all too close to call since Nov. 4. The Senate races are particularly important for Democrats and President-elect Barack Obama, USA Today reported Wednesday. After picking up six seats Nov. 4, Democrats will control 57 seats come January, three shy of the filibuster-proof 60. The Democratic tally includes Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

- In Georgia, Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss, while garnering more votes than Democratic foe Jim Martin, didn't get the necessary more than 50 percent, triggering a Dec. 2 runoff. Sen. John McCain is to visit Georgia Thursday to campaign for Chambliss and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin also may stump there, USA Today said. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who sought the GOP presidential nomination, donated $5,000 to Coleman as he monitors the mandated Minnesota recount.

- Minnesota election officials will hand-count nearly 3 million votes to determine the Senate race between incumbent Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken. Slightly more than 200 votes separate the two.

- And in Alaska, officials were counting the tens of thousands of absentee and mail-in ballots that will decide whether convicted felon Sen. Ted Stevens will return to Washington, USA Today said. The veteran Republican, found guilty of seven felonies related to financial disclosures, led Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by 3,257 votes as of Tuesday.

I know. I put a post on here the day after the elections about the Coleman/Franken race. I was SO glad that the elections were going to be over...but NO! At least the attack ads are gone. But it is still a leading story on the news. Glad I don't watch the news very often.

The Coleman/Franken thing won't be over for a VERY long time. Whomever loses will be taking legal action. The first results had them at ~600 votes apart, then later that day it changed to ~400. Then supposedly some absentee ballots were found and the gap was closed to 200.

I say just let them both be Senators. Coleman for the first half of the term and Franken for the second half. Or better yet, give it to the Independant candidate Barkely (the received ~15% of the vote total).

If an Idiot like Al Franken gets a position at the White House as a press secretary, I hope he as successful at that as he was with Air America, which couldn't even pay it's own bills! Nobody wanted to advertise on a frequency loaded down with liberal drivel!

In an initial count after Election Day, Mr. Stevens led Mr. Begich, the mayor of Anchorage, by 3,257 votes.

Mr. Begich led Mr. Stevens by just 814 votes after about 57,000 additional ballots were counted on Wednesday. So far, about 279,000 votes have been counted in the Senate race, and about 35,000 more remain to be counted. It could be next week before the count is complete.

It Still Ain't Over

The recount in the race to fill the last seat in the U.S. Senate took a noteworthy turn on Friday as Democrat Al Franken held onto a lead over Republican Norm Coleman for the first time.

As Minnesota's canvassing board continued its review of over 1,300 disputed ballots, Franken's lead grew to 252 votes, The Politico reports.


It must be true . . . "Minnesota" is an old Indian word for "Florida."

It will be fun to listen to Franken as a senator!

Interestingly he was beaten in the dem primary and reelected as an independent....an interesting turn. Cleary he was getting some repub votes. I don't agree with his pro war stance but I respect his no bs stance and his independence.

I really hate to listen to him talk though!

Let the Post Election Litigation Begin!

The Minnesota Canvassing Board ruled Franken, the comedian and former radio host, won the razor-close election recount by 225 votes out of nearly 3 million cast Nov. 4.

Though Franken has been declared the winner, the contest will not end today. Coleman has a seven-day window in which to file a lawsuit contesting the board's ruling before Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Secretary of State Mark Ritchie sign the election certificate.
