gOS computer question

Anbody have any experience with the gOS software. It's the free Linux development that gOS is distributinng for cheap pc's out of walmart. I downloaded it and burned it to CD and tried installing it. It appears to load ok from the DVD drive initially with much activity occuring on the DVD, but it never reaches the point to actually install to the HDD. Then after about a half hour or so it just dies. Anybody have any ideas what's going on here?

- Peter.

What software did you use to burn the CD? You probably downloaded an ISO image. You can't just copy it, you have to use the burn iso to disk option on your burning software.

Yes, I downloaded the ISO then used RecordNow to burn it to disc. The computer appeared to be reading it ok. It appeared to be loading but after furious DVD activity for over half an hour just slowed down and stopped without any software being loaded onto the Laptop.

There are lots of Linux flavors out there. I've been using Ubuntu very successfully on various PCs. Even Ubuntu comes in three flavors: Ubuntu for people who like the Gnome desktop, Kubuntu for those who prefer KDE, and Xubuntu (my fave) for people with older computers. They are all available free from http://www.ubuntu.com

Everybody has a favorite. Try more than one!

I would recommend Ubuntu or OzOS but geOS is very friendly as well, you have to use a good burning software and burn the CD at a lower speed than the rated speed on disc, this is because the files are heavily compressed. Best part about latest Ubuntu is that you can make a USB install disc after you have done the initial install for future installs, makes it fast and convenient. All Linux CD have media check option during install, you can check your burnt media for errors that way before installing.

I have been on SuSE since 2000 and now for the last two years on Ubuntu, it has been a worry free PC experience for me, I don't have to get up in the moring and boot the PC to worry about virus, malware, hack etc. or update virus signature or install latest HIPS, I just boot to do what I originally intended to do with the PC, thats be productive.

I agree with Ubuntu. I run a dual boot system on my laptop with XP and Ubuntu. The easiest way to do this is to download the wubi installer and then your favorite flavor of Ubuntu. Launch wubi and in no time, you're a Linux Geek without giving up Windows if you need it.

Interestin comments. gOS is Ubuntu so that sounds promising. I was trying on a PC at the office and there may have been some hardware related issues on that one that were causing problems.

My girlfriends Toshiba laptop which is about 4 years old lost it's Hard Drive recently and I'm thinking of getting a replacement drive for about 70 bucks and loading gOS on it. I was able to boot it from the CD-Rom drive and it looked promising so hopefully I'll be able to get it all operational again fairly easily.
