Audacity software

Anybody here have any experience with Audacity software? It is bundled with a number of analog to digital music products. The software is free and it's open source. I am looking at the optioins they have for the file formats created.

They have:
AUP - Audacity Project format
WAV - Windows Wave format
AIFF - Audio Interchange Format
Sun AU/NeXT format
MP3 - MPEG format

I have no idea which one would be the best to use or what the differences are. Anybody know something about these? My goal is to get my vinyl records converted and into I Tunes so I can put them on my I Pod.

Ask our Prez elect. He wrote a book on the Audacity of Hope. :D

I think he's going to have his hands full with other things for the foreseeable future. I wish him well. I can't imagine why ANYbody would want his job.

I use audacity. For ipod use, mp3 works great, and can easily be imported into itunes.

When asked about what they would consider first, McCain outlined a few of his main concerns and the priority to attack them. Obama said he could do several at a time. I would think he could answer your question too. Give him a buzz.

I wouldn't.

Thanks, Joey. I'll try that tonight.

Who would of thought that when Biden said the next administration was going to be tested it would be by Dee8go?

.mp3. Lame encoded to it's highest bitrate (NOT VBR!!!)

you will see a loss is sound quality - .mp3 is a compressed format. You wont notice any of it on you ipod, though.

If you have the room, I would save everything .wav and convert it twice; save the .wav backups on cd's (.wav is a lossless file)

Oops...thanks for jogging my memory...Audacity is the software I purchased and use today!

Depending on what and where I plan to use the audio, the final transfer is either .wav or .mp3. I use .wav if I'm preserving something, like an eroding medium such as vinyl or tape.

The effects algorithms aren't "studio-quality", but are usable. For most of my in-a-hurry projects, they are pretty good.

Note that I do have a full-fledged studio, so if need be, I have processors available to clean up the source or tweak the final mix. But for most purposes, the audio degradation isn't discernable...

Audacity is a basic programme but I have found it quite good for this very same purpose, you can do niose reduction and all sorts of tricky things with it. Worth a try!!

I use Audacity all the time for mastering and mixing the voice-overs on my contract Flash projects. It's easy to use and certainly works well enough for the audio in a web-based training piece. It's simple enough that you can twiddle with it for 15 minutes and be a fairly capable user. Compared to WaveLab it's a breeze to use...I never could get the hang of WaveLab.

My only complaint is that, in my use, it's dangerously easy to overwrite an existing file if you are making multiple takes.

This has to be a record: one reply to a post and it's already politics. You troll.

This is great information. Thanks to all of you. I want to keep my "twiddling" to a bare minimum. If I uunderstand what I've read about this program so far, it will automatically separate tracks on an LP. I have heard people say that you have to manually separate the songs with some conversion programs. I've got hundreds of records and hope to convert a grreat many of them.

I don't think the version I have will automatically separate tracks...when I'm in the studio there are sometimes long periods of dead air and it just sails along recording everything.

But, you can just cut-and-paste to edit out that stuff or add in some blank time between sides, etc.. you should just download it and twiddle.

The only thing that might be an issue is getting the stereo tracks saved separately so you'll need some sort of audio panel to do that. We use a gizmo called an E-MU 0404 audio/midi interface. It will pull in stereo channels from aux or 48v and output them independently through a USB-2 port to your computer where the Audacity software can do it's thing. You can get it from Sweetwater Sound.

Dee8go 11-20-2008 11:21 AM

There was a dialogue box somewhere that allowed you to check either stereo or mono. I'm hoping this won't be too complicated.
