Why the H Do I Need Blood Pressure Medicine?

Started on bp medicine yesterday... My diastolic hanging around 100 for awhile.

And I'm saying to myself, why do I need this stuff - no risk factors - non-stressful job, no commute, not overweight, don't drink...

Got my son ready for school this AM. Plenty of time.

Twice forgets his lunch. 20 minutes to comb his hair, "forgets" 2X to wash his face or brush his teeth after reminders, won't wear a jacket, it's 28 degrees.

Get him to put on a jacket in the car.

Takes it off and throws it in the backseat as he runs to the bus....

Let me guess, age 13-15?

1. Forgets lunch? Let him go hungry or have to bum money off his friends to buy it.
2. Doesn't wash or brush? He will eventually when he wants a girlfriend...
3. Doesn't wear a jacket? He'll suffer with a cold at some point.

Relax! (I say from my child rearing armchair...)

My 17 year old evil genius son was running around his college campus (30 degrees) Monday in jeans shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. (he locked himself out of dorm room and had to run to class). From what I can tell he is no worse for it and maybe a bit more educated in an unexpected way.

He sounds EXACTLY like my 11 year old son who brings tremendous stress to my wife every morning. It'd be interesting to check her BP in the morning vs. once the other 3 are out of the house. The kid gets up at 7, eats 3-4 bowls of cereal between then and 8:20 and then runs around the house like a chicken with its head cut off trying to get out the door at 8:35 (forgetting 1/2 of the things he's supposed to do). She's stopped reminding and prompting him and just leaves the house at 8:35, if he's not ready he has to walk to school himself (she drives son#2 into kindergarten and anyone else who's ready or wants a ride tags along).

It doesn't matter if the tv is on or not, if he's by himself or not. He'll run out of the house without his homework, a project and/or trumpet and there aren't any repercussions at school anymore, I guess it might hurt kids' self-esteem?

He is incredibly bright and does very well academically, does a couple after-school programs (some math league and a science thing) so he can focus when he has to and now is playing both CYO and town basketball. We've taken away varying different activities thinking he was overburdened but nothing made a difference. It's hard to complain too much when he continues to do so well with his grades (effort is another matter). We're just afraid that eventually it will catch up with him. I know I floated through school pre-college, doing very little yet doing very well (not to the extent that he has so far, though) and those piss-poor habits didn't serve me well in college.

I just think he's got so much going on up there that the simple things become an afterthought. He definitely doesn't take after me where there's just not a lot going on up there.

BTDT. In my case it didn't help any.

LOL.....Sounds like a normal teenager.

Those little carbon based units can be a PITA!!
You really have to pick your battles. I think personal hygiene is important but him forgetting his lunch or a jacket is his problem. When he goes hungry or gets cold he'll learn. Ant that will be the best teacher!

I'm a big fan of learning by experience. How many times do you tell the little bugger not to touch the hot stove? Yo know he's going to do it anyway. So let him touch it, he'll learn.

kid had pulled an all-nighter. He spent 10 hours writing a major English paper. I suspect the brain failure was partly due to lack of sleep. He did not enjoy being locked out so he may remeber next time

Diastolic @ 100 = Reason enough.

Your stroke is not something you want you family to have to live through.

Because you don't want to stroke out and die if you are lucky? And if you are unlucky, you get to spend the rest of your life disabled.

Not talking about your son

but will tell you what helped at my house:
We fought the bedtime battles and get up and get ready in the AM battles and one day I'd had too much. New Rule: Stay up as long as you want and do whatever you want but you all have alarm clocks and you are now responsible for all your own morning routine. At (insert time here) I will be in the car to take you to school and at (previous time + 5 min) I will be gone (or back in the house or whatever). If you forget something it won't affect anybody but you so I don't care, I already have my diploma.
I realize everybody's logistics are different and all kids are different too but once they get the idea that their behavior is only impacting them negatively it loses its novelty.
BTW, started this 3 years ago when they were 10, 12, 14; 16.

You all mention boys at that age...well, despite the alleged maturity level of girls, any of those scenarios would fit my daughter!

I think during adolescence, a section of brain goes dormant...I'm certain of it!

But in order to reduce the stress in my already-tense life, I've learned to ignore some of those lapses in her behavior and let her suffer the consequences.

Today, I drop her off at school, drive off, and shortly thereafter, catch a glimpse of her house keys and cellphone resting on the seat beside me...

I switched to taking garlic oil capsules 2000mg a day.Haven't needed bp medicine for 3 years.

Watch your salt intake and eat more stuff with potassium in it. High sodium intake is probably the most common cause of high BP.
