computer screen issue?

I have an older (6 years) Dell Laptop I haven't used in a couple of years. I fired it up today to locate a document which I believe only exists on that laptop. Everything loads up right, but the screen is so dim, I can make out the cursor and icons, ect....but can't read anything to be able to get to the doc. Thought I would just plug it into a desktop monitor and go from there, but all I get is a blank screen when I plug into a bigger monitor. Any suggestions before sending it off? I really just need the one doc off of it and it goes back into a closet.

Thanks.

ps: I'm trying to find the doc for a fellow MB sucker, I mean owner;

You to push the monitor button you your keyboard to fire up the desktop monitor. The reason for your screen going dim is the ballast or backlight which can be a DIY but in your case I recommend The Geek Squad:cool:

Don't worry, I am proud of spending my time doing other things than bothering about computers, but what monitor button? I did find the instruction disk and am going to reboot and try the Fn brightness command.

I had already dumped the c drive off this thing onto an external HD, but I think this doc is on the desktop.

The desktop is located on the C drive.

Usually: Documents and Settings > [user] > Desktop
User is your login name or all users, Default user, etc

If you know the name of the document you can search the disk for it.

Remember back when the IBM Selectric was the cat's meow? If I'd have had a computer with Word on it when I was in school, I would have been in heaven.

Having pledges was heaven, without tiring your fingers;)

I was fortunate to have a friend who could type 90 words a minute. She typed most of my papers in college. She could type a 20 page paper while I drank a cup of coffee on my way to class.

By grad school I was doing my own typing on an old POS manual typewriter.
