Pawnshop tools?? Supporting thieves?

So friend of mine got this set of Snap-on wrenches at a pawnshop for basically half price. Yeah, I know. Despite pawnshop assurances it's likely that half the stuff in there is stolen... or is it?

Times get tough, the tough decision is "What do I need to do without so I can provide for mine?"

Pawn shops have their place...now is a buyers' market...most folks are either cutting back or have already joined the line of the "must sell to make the next payment..." group.

Look at the change you get back from a dollar...some coins look like they came from a coin collection...wheat-back pennies, a few buffalo-backed nickles, pre-'64 dimes...the like...these items I got within the past month or so...

If your friend is getting great bargains at the pawn stores...more power to him...nothing is stopping you or me from enjoying the benefits of a "too expensive for me anymore" decision someone else made.

Besides, we don't get all "squishy" about a less-than-1-year-old (or "executive driven") car when it shows up on the lot with a sticker about $8K-$12K less than new, do we? We look for the obvious flood-water stains, have a trusted-mechanic look it over for saw-dust in the tranny and if he thinks it's a good deal, we buy it...what's stopping us from having the local cop-shop run the sheet on the pawn-shop to be sure it's clean before we partake of the bargains...

Then, everyone can sleep restfully at night...

Most police depts. have a unit that has 'pawnshop detail' as part of their job description. One hopes that reported thefts lead to spot checks at pawn shops but who knows.

You would think...but it takes a LOT OF COMPLAINTS and some proof that the stuff being sold is actually stolen before some places are actually checked...

A few months back, 3 local scrap yards in the Eau Claire area finally got busted for buying "scrap" copper wire AFTER the local cops decided that a sting operation might straighten things out...they had XCEL ENGERGY "give" them a bait roll of copper, with THEIR NAME OF OWNERSHIP on the roll (EXCEL's)...all 3 yards took the reel even AFTER acknowledging the label on the reel...2 wanted the lable removed, the other took it straight up.

Yep, I guess there's no honor among thieves...

Well, if you buy it, hope it doesn't get ripped off...and if it does, consider the money spent as "rental fees" - because, just like beer and liquor, you never "buy" the drink...you only "rent" it...

For your own stuff, just buy a hand held engraver and ID your tools with initials or last 4 digits of SS no.

Here in the Bay the law has made them stop taking CATs. Good idea but it pissed me off as I had two that I had taken off myself and I had to donate them to the Palo Alto Landfill metal recycling bin. They were only worth $10 to $20 apiece.

And, metal thefts might drop off for a while -- the price of scrap copper has decreased by 50% or more.

Damn, and I got a bunch of it, all legit of course.

I really don't understand the pawnshops I have been to. The stuff they have is pure junk that looks like it has been run over. Their tools look like they came out of a garbage can. But the prices on them are same as new or more. For example, a bottom of the line plug in drill, that you could buy new at HD for 24.95, and that looks like it has been through the war also, has a tag on it of 35.00. ??? I have to figure they are making their money "some other way".

If you buy something at a pawnshop that turns out to have been stolen, can you be charged with possessing stolen property?

As long as you have proof you bought it there then the blame passes to them, so make sure you have a detailed receipt.
