Thomas Jefferson's government

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe.
Thomas Jefferson

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
Thomas Jefferson

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson

To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
Thomas Jefferson

I liked number three. If we had to save up in order to finance wars, I doubt there would be very many. Can you imagine putting a war on layaway?!

Reading the things written by the founders of our country is very enlightening. I try to read a biography or history from that era every so often just to stay grounded. I think if more people did that, we'd be generally happier and our quality of life would improve.

Yeah but.....
Yeah, but I can get elected by promising to ake from THE RICH and give to "the deserving".

I still cannot find that article in the Constitution that permits the government to confiscate money from citizens to give as public benevolences. It would a misunderstanding the the langauge of the Constitution to say that it falls under the " Promote the general welfare".

That issue was settled years ago. For example, see http://www.ssa.gov/history/court.html

You might disagree with the Supreme Court's analysis, but the Constitution says that the Court's opinion is the only one that counts. Once the Supreme Court speaks, that's the end of the discussion unless the Supreme Court decides to reverse its prior ruling or the Constitution is amended.

Only if the other side does the same thing. Otherwise we have the same issue as the Geneva Conventions. Kept to by one side and pissed on (rightfully so) by the other side. Or like communism. It works ONLY IF everyone really followed it.

Charming as Aesop’s fables but neither Jefferson nor any of the founders envisioned today’s society - particularly the millions of government employees and their dependents.

While I agree with you, did it stop people from getting pissed in 2000? Seems to me like the SC is right only when it agrees with you (not you but people in general) and wrong with it disagrees with you (not you but people in general).

I apply that line of thinking to everybody. If you agree with me, you're correct and obviously a very smart person. If you don't, then you're obviously wrong . . . .

Which brings us to another question. What they said worked for their time. Will it work for our time? Will what we say today work for the next generation? If so, fine. If not, should we insist that they take it as gospel truth?
