Archiving photos

What software do you use to organize, file, and archive your photographs? I sued to sell a product called Cumulus, but I honestly don't know wether it was better or worse than other comparable products. It was scalable and could handle immense collections of images. Their product category was what they referred to as DAM, Digital Asset Management.

What do you use? How do you like it?

That's Internet-based, isn't it?

I was looking at Aperture yesterday. I like the way it operates. It has the look and feel of sorting slide on a light table, looking at them through a loupe, etc. Those are all things I can appreciate because that's what I'm familiar with.

I'd like to organize all of the family photographs if I can. There could be thousands of pictures by the time I'm done.

Use Picassa also

It is a good, easy, and free product to run the library part of the images. I still backup the files to another hard drive and also to DVD on occassion so I don't lose anything. I haven't gone to the offsite storage yet that would cover the house fire / damage issue.

You can download Picassa from Google.

Adobe makes a product called Lightroom. It is great for doing a lot more than basic work with digital images, but not as feature rich as is Photoshop. However it is highly tuned for what most photographers want in imaging software.

Not sure what you mean by "archiving." To store digital photos on paper with a long life, HP makes a premium paper which they say is stable for up to 80 years if kept in a typical glass front frame. It also produces excellent results. Most other photo papers will show color shifting and/or fading starting weeks after printing.

To archive digital images, you’ll want at least 3 copies of the images on separate media. Replace the media as it goes out of warranty. We use 2 servers to keep images on line plus 2 2 tb drives to keep copies off site. The off-site drives get replaced every couple of years (mostly due to space issues) and the on-line drives are replaced with the same frequency.

I meant archiving as in storing, not preserving an actual print.
