Mark Felt aka Deepthroat dead. Hero or Coward?

Mark Felt, the "Deepthroat" who fed information to Woodward and Berstein and brought down Richard Nixon died last night.
Many people consider him a hero for "saving the country" from Nixon.

Other people, including many LEOs consider him a coward. Consider, he was the #2 man in the FBI, sworn to uphold the law. Not only that, he was a supervisor who is supposed to lead by example. If the #2 man in the FBI cannot, or will not openly testify about crimes, then who can be expected to testify? Risk comes with the prestige of being a LEO. Also his motives for testifying are not as pure as one might hope--he was pissed off at being passed over for promotion to the head of the FBI, and acted in revenge.

I think he acted cowardly, what do you think?

I don't know enough about him to judge.

What do you think he should have done differently?

The whole Whitewater (WW) (CORRECTION - WATERGATE)(WG) affair was a snowball's ride downhill from the word "GO!" and it just kept getting more "Keystone Cops" as it kept going...

But, when DT (Deep-Throat) was finally revealed recently, the way the guy acted and the the reason behind his actions just seemed to be "sour-grapes" from a governmental point of view.

At least, what it showed was this...no information, regardless how private, is protected in government hands...someone, somewhere, for whatever reason, will take whatever YOU think is sacred, and sacrafice it out in the open, for all to see, just to please themselves.

It's funny how we put such an emphasis on collecting data and will go so far as to put people in prison IF they lie to, or mislead, an investigator, but we'll pardon, fine or slap the wrists of people that actually kill people. They'll lie about how, why or when they killed someone, but they'll still be let out or serve very little time due to the fact that they might say "I'm sorry" or something piddly like that...

Mark kept to himself, didn't get promoted like he thought he should have and decided that - well - whatever... maybe, in the end, he thought what he did was wrong, and knew he was going to have to attone for it, but like everything else, it sounds like he just wasted away in solitude...all by himself, with just a few family members around him...his role in the whole affair may end up being a footnote in the history books, or he'll be a hero to the folks that end up writing the history books...

Only time will tell...

He should have testified in open court, or for a Senate/ House Panel, or simply called a press conference and done it. In any event he should have set an example for the average citizen to follow; not become a shadowy figure mired in mystery and intrigue.

Its not like Nixon was John Gotti.

Odd thing.I once worked briefly for Nick Salgo who conceived, designed, built and later owned the Watergate complex on the old Foggy Bottom area.

Whenever I asked him about it he would tell me an off color joke.

Neither nor. In today's US, his actions are either forgotten, or not known in the first place, except by a minority.
From what I can tell, his actions have had little impact on the country - politicians still want to take your money, and will still lie to do so.

I don't think it really matters. He was an instrument of what went around coming around.

His methods may not have been the most righteous, but politics rarely is.
His motivations are not praiseworthy, but hardly surprising.

Hero.

He revealed enough for the reporters to uncover the truth. He brought to justice a criminal presidency.

He rightly or wrongly thought his life was at risk by his actions.

I am trying to figure out what this has to do with Whitewater. You I am guessing are not old enough to have lived through it all. I am guessing you are confusing whitewater with watergate!

True. Gotti never was able to get the FBI to harass his political enemies.
