1980 500SL Euro Model - Unusual!
I was at the grocery store the other day, and I spotted this silver SL in the parking lot. Well, the lady that drove it was just coming out to her car at that time, and I had a chance to ask her about her car, it was a model I had never seen before - a 1980 R107, 500SL imported from Germany. She was an interesting German lady, and I got to speak the little German I learned in college with her as she told me about her car. She said she would rather have my 1989 420SEL, because she really liked S-Class Mercedes. Anyway, this model was new to me, and I thought I had seen most MB years and cars! I know you don't see many of these around...

I've got one of these, I think :-)
Mine's an '84 500SL German 'grey market', not a U.S. import, and fits the description in your link but I thought mine was designated as a W107 not R107. I thought the R models started in the late '80s.
If so, is mine a different car ? If yes, what's the difference ? Thanks, Courtney

I should know this but arent there only R107's and C107's? People usually just generalize everything into the W (sedan) prefix.
R roadster A cabriolet V long chassis T wagon C coupe

That era of 500sl is a relatively high performance version with many special parts. Its very desireable and rare in the states.

Mine's a euro 500SL as well, but they don't seem to be all that rare. I see quite a few of them around.

Sounds like she might be willing!!
If it has a stick shift, then swap your car for it!!!
But I am pretty sure you had to take the 6 cylinder ones to get a Factory equipped, manual shift R107 model SL. You would love the performance, especially after a US spec 420SEL automatic!!
