Not a bad time to buy a pickup if you need one.

We just bought a brand new, loaded '08 Chevy Colorado 4x4 Extended Cab w/painted-to-match cap for our new VT/NH salesman. Total including all the b.s. (title, tax, reg.) was $23.5K, sticker was almost $29K. Dealer rebate went from $2K two weeks ago when I told the salesman I wanted one to a total of $5K when he delivered it today! Plus a $500 Lowe's gift card. I know they have old stock to unload but how the Big 3 are going to turn it around by paying the dealers the loss on each vehicle is beyond me.

We put them all out to bid (to multiple dealers and manufacturers) but do give preference to a dealer who has served us well over the years if his price is in the neighborhood. We've been onto Chevy light- and medium-duty pickups for about 6 years now for our salespeople and they've served us well.

Can they afford to make the rebates even higher? Can they afford not to?

The local GMC dealer (in Hartford) just closed up shop after 20-something years in business. He used to give away a car every year to a randomly drawn city high school student with perfect attendance and was heavily involved in the civic scene. Another long-standing Chevy dealer about 20 miles away (with a very good rep.) just closed as well.

I don't see how any dealer that's built a big fancy showroom within the past few years is going to make it.

Even at $23k i'm sure they are still making a profit. Did we ever figure out how much it takes to actually build a pick-up truck. That being said I've noticed a drastic fall in the prices of late model Land Rover Discoveries...I'm starting to get tempted.

I am looking for an 03-05 Ram 1500 with the Hemi.

When I find one of them cheap, I will snap it up.

I've been thinking the same thing. I'm thinking of dumping my 93 and 95 trucks for a new 09. A reg cab, long bed, work truck with convenience package, 4.8liter, auto, ac, tow package, etc. Sticker is $23,6K local dealer has them for $16,3K. I need to put $1-2K into the 93 so between dumping the two and money I would put into the 93, maybe $5K down, cheap payments and another write off. I'm getting close..... RT

I've sworn up and down that I'd never buy a new car/truck and that I don't want any more car payments. After driving a brand-spankin' new truck around for a couple days until my saleman comes down to pick is making that stand awful difficult!!!

Truck cocaine.

Give ya a taste, ya want more.

For me, it's a battle between car payment or tuition payment.
I sure hope my kids appreciate my sacrifice.....

I've only bought new once, that 95 Chevy truck I mentioned. I swore I would never do it again, due mainly to depreciation and taxes. But it doesn't take a smart fellow to see that when an '09 is approaching the price I paid for the '95 that its a very good deal. Used is not worth it right now, anyone with a used truck is trying to dump it for all the money. New is actually a better deal. I used to really enjoy wrenching on the old trucks when needed but I now have more pressing issues so one new reliable truck may be the best thing. What I cannot stand paying is the $1000+in sales tax and then the 3-4years of local property tax at $400-500/year. Thats $3+K out of my pocket that I will never see again, no value, etc. RT

Tell me about it. Our trim guy is trying to sell his super clean 2006 Chevy 1500 for $10k and can't. You can go out and buy the same truck new for just under $14k.

Next year when I'll have the money, if I can still get new F150's for $14k I'll get one of those.

Used trucks at this point make no sense. They are either beat to death and require a ton of work, or are really clean and not much cheaper than new. I don't want another project so something new is tempting.

The last thing I want now is a payment, so I'll have to see where I stand with cash after I sell some houses next year.
