Christmas Traditions

Just thought I would post our routine. I suspect many of you have one too.

Last night we watched several christmas movies ending with "A Christmas Story" by Jean Shepard (the bee bee gun christmas?).

Then we read the account of Jusus' birth in one of the modern bibles (I prefer the King James version)......."and they were sore afraid" or is that soar?

We usually go to our church for a candlelight service that is all singing the old favorite christmas carols but last night we decided it was too cold.

Then we opened one present each.

This morning we got up and opened the rest before eating.

Among other things, the Lovely Mrs. W got me two Colliers Pictorial historys of ww1 and ww2....cool!

Our youngest is junior in college but still enjoys the family traditions began before she was born.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it.

Good will to all!

Oh, yeah, I got a t shirt with Ralphie and his two chums with slick putting his tongue on the flag pole with the caption .."I TRIPLE dog dare you!". I am wearing it now!

We just started. Somehow my kid has decided that every holiday has to be accompanied with a full dinner. So far we've gone skiing the last three Christmases in a row. Today will make it four.

Decent weather here in DC so I'm smoking a rib roast. Gave the wife a gift certificate to Jiffy Lube. She must have really liked it because she was speechless!

we dont do anything fun or cool. We just open presents, hang out all day and then go to sleep.....its pretty lame.

we used to visit with family and go sledding or skiing or other winter time activities when we lived in CT, but then we moved to this god forsaken state they call FL

Sounds like our Christmas. We did add my older sister's husband to the bunch, though, which is nice because he livens things up. It's pretty much just me, my parents and two sisters sitting around the living room opening presents while my little (24-year-old) sister acts like a 5-year-old in a desperate attempt to be the center of attention (I can't blame her, she's mentally handicapped, but it grinds on you after a while). After that my older sister and her husband leave to go to his parents' house, leaving me, the spinster, behind. We used to do extended family stuff, but my grandmother died in April and aunts/uncles/cousins all did their own thing, so nothing this year. We used to do a big dinner at Grammie's, with lots of pies ... had some good Christmases as a kid.

I did get my cat a cool present, which he unwrapped violently, "killed" and is now sleeping on. It's one of those long dog toys with a santa hat on it. That's sort of become a tradition for me ... my cat seems to enjoy getting a present. After that I washed the car and drove around for a while ... Bodhi REALLY needed a wash.

We have Christmass eve with my dads side of the family and Christmass day with my moms. Its always a blast, since we rotate who hosts it each year.

When we were little we were very lucky and had two Christmass's. My grandparents would give all there grandkids just as many presents as our parents did Christmass eve. The whole downstairs of there house would look like Santa's workshop. Followed by a huge dinner! We had some damn good Chrismass's, I miss that. My uncle tried to buy their old house back this year, we all miss that house.

Me too ... although I went for a long drive ... but it's the one of the year where the roads are really clear, and the weather was great today. Plus I kind of like watching people piling out of cars into houses with gifts, having a good time, whether in the upscale neighborhoods or not-so-hot parts of town. Vicarious Christmas.

Powerpig,

Be careful about what you give your wife for Christmas.

I went out this afternoon and it was below freezing but no wind and a beautiful sunny day.

So I went for a drive. No cars, everybody was inside.

When I went out my front door it was so quiet with no cars or trucks moving around I could hear folks just talking in normal conversations far enough away that I couldn't even figure out where they were.

A nice quiet Christmas.

All of my kids and grandkids are coming in on Saturday for the family christmas. It should be a hoot with ten kiddies from ages four months to eight years.....

Wow ... sounds like a handful, and a blast for the kids. We used to have a lot of fun when we were little, my sisters and cousins and I. I miss those days ... Christmas was always absolute heaven ... heck, even up through high school.

This year I missed Alan Maitland's reading of "The Shepherd" on CBC's "As it Happens" on the 24th . . . first time in six years . . . time for a new tradition.
