Closing an Airvent

I got a q for all of you guys...

The heater that heats my room has a thermostat in one of the bigger rooms in the house. That room stays cooler than my room, so when the heater is on, it heats up my room to like 95*, while that room warms up very slowly. I tried closing my vent, but since the room is so large that it has to heat, it still heats up my room.

My question is what can I get or build to seal up my airvent so that no heat goes into my room? It needs to be removable, and somewhat inexpensive...

I see this as a 2-parter answer...

#1.) Depending on what you have for a vent covering (slats/grate/floor/wall) the design will be more of what you want to have seen by others...or if you don't care, remove the covering, insert a cardboard barrier (an old box works nice), tuck some crumpled newspaper in next, then replace the covering...that may stop the heat from coming in...

THEN...

#2.) Find a duct-boosting fan or some item that can suck the heated air out of the duct that feeds the big room and wire that in so that it's running and PULLING the heated air out before it gets heading down the duct that feeds the little room...then, when the main fan for the whole-house heater shuts down, you can set the duct-sucker with its own thermostat to shut down too...no sense in pulling non-heated air and blowing into the heated room... : :

Many HVAC systems have actual valves on the ducting so you can bias the air flow and compensate for the very problem you're having. The system on the house I used to live in had butterfly valves on every duct controlled by a small lever sticking out from the side of the duct.

When the lever is aligned with the duct, the valve is open. When it's across the duct, it's closed.

If your system doesn't have these, they can be installed easily and for a relatively small amount of money. DIY.

True, but the problem with "balancing" is you have to still maintain an air-flow through the system...

Not too much of a problem during the winter when you're running heat...most time, most folks can't get enough...

But, come the summer time...

If there's NOT enough air-flow, particularly over the cooling coils of the air-conditioner, the coils themselves will freeze up...you've got to keep enough air-flow over the coils or else...and that's where the balancing becomes a problem...too cold for some, not cool enough for others...if all vents get restricted too much, frozen coils...

And who's been in an office environment where EVERYONE is happy with the way the venting is set?

Huh?

Me neither...

Just get a piece of magnetic sheet and cut it to the size of the vent cover. Stick it on when you don't want heat and take it off when you do.
