What should I bid ...

to save this car from ending up on a schlock lot?

`87 560SEL, 116K, quite clean. Body is actually just about perfect - nothing large enough to be called a dent, no rust identified during my quick inspection, might neet to re-paint the hood and trunk lid, brand new tires, chrome 16 hole wheels in excellent shape, palamino leather in excellent condition, needs an ignition switch.

The owner hit something that bent the tie rods on both sides, but I couldn't find any other underside or suspension damage front, center or rear. The car was donated to a local charity and has been consigned to an insurance auction tomorrow (Monday, 1/5) morning.

Sorry to interrupt the important stuff that typically gets discussed here in the Open Forum, but I really hate the thought of this fine old MB either ending up on some crappy lot ... or in Mexico.

I'm thinking it should be worth at least five-grand but would really appreciate your your input.

Thanks!

Norm

I wouldn't go over $1,500 unless it was real clean.

If you work on these yourself tie rods are nothing.

First of ALL, realize that it's 22 years old and it drinks fuel like it cost $.50 per gallon.

There is no market for these vehicles unless they are pristine and the mileage is documented. If you can't document the mileage, assume it has 200K on the clock.

This specific vehicle also has "issues".

I'd really doubt that anyone would give him more than $2500. for it today.

Agreed on the tie rods - I've done `em on 114s, 123s and a 126.

I was planning on between about $800 and $1,000, but if the car was worth more, I'd step up a bit.

If you ask for my opinion "Which you didn't" I would buy it. I am going to buy me one of those for driving around town in class. I will drive my CLK 320 for the long hauls. Just my $.10 worth, you know because of inflation.

You have the right price range in mind already, if it was really cherry you could go over $1k.

If you cleaned it up and sold it $2,500 would probably be about right.

Market has tanked on these

No records, time at 116k for the timing chain, tensioner and guide rails, to be done, plus some paint work is needed besides the suspension, the HVAC might not work, it could have rust and water leaks, and it will come out of the insurance auction with a salvage title for the buyer.

No more than $1,000 max....

Paint work is easy - I have a body shop. The vehicle will not have a salvage title - I buy cars here regularly ... clean, clear titles (of course, salvage title cars are available as well - I typically don't buy those).

My inspection, although brief, was a bit more than cursory - if there's rust, it's exceptionally well hidden (original paint, so there's nothing hidden there), certain nothing shows up in the usual places.

Thanks for your input - I appreciate the belt, guide rail and tensioner suggestion.

You might be able to find a place on the Colorado DMV webpage where you can enter a VIN and see when it was last emissions tested. There is such a place on the Virginia system - it can give you years of inspection information, including mileage. Just another free datapoint.

Check CAREFULLY for telltale marks of flood damage...lift a few portions of carpet or lift the back seat and check for evidence there...also check underneath the spare tire...

Might be the reason the vehicle is on the block...
