A routine traffic stop on an upstate New York interstate (I90) turned into a shootout Saturday after police say a man riding in a taxicab opened fire on a state trooper.Brown was taking a taxi from Hartford to an undisclosed location in the Capital District when the taxi was pulled over for speeding at about 11:55 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway near Exit 10, police said. As the officer was talking with Brown, the only passenger, and the taxi driver, who was not named, Brown produced an assault rifle and fired at the trooper
The alleged shooter was hospitalized with gunshot wounds Saturday evening, as police kept a stretch of Interstate 90 in East Greenbush outside of Albany closed for hours while they investigated the scene.
Shell casings were strewn on both sides of the highway, and at least one civilian's car was hit by a bullet, according to Capital News 9.
State police weren't providing details about the incident, except to say that the suspect was shot and in police custody.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as a large contingent of state and local police responded to the area at around noon.
