What's Happening with HDTV Prices?

In mid-Dec., I finally caved in to my son's pleadings and bought a HDTV.

Panasonic 50" Plasma 720p, for which I paid $900 at BB. Then I stopped looking at prices (obviously) since I wasn't in the market.

Today looked at Bestbuy's website to see how much the price came down. Lo and behold, it's now $1400.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8723045&type=product&id=1200703056300

What gives?

I thought all the stuff was going to be coming down after the holidays? Isn't there a recession going on?

P.S. Now the kid is still unhappy - he wants XBOX 360 (we have the original).

You can't win.

HDTV broadcast is happening on Feb 17th - which means, your old analog TV won't get broadcast signals anymore. Therefore, lots of people will be buying new digital TVs in the next month or so, and I'm betting some retailers are going to try to cash in on that.

Costco is slowly getting some new tv's in, and I want to see what they get in. They have a few nice ones in the $300-$400 range, maybe is Obama gives me some money this year, it might go into a TV.

There's talk about putting off that Feb 17th migration. Believe it or not some 20-million households apparently are thicker than wood and still haven't got converter boxes, cable, or sat yet...

I paid $899 for my 50" Samsung Plasma on sale, it's at $999 (normal price) again.

PS: Xbox 360 looks awesome on a 50" HDTV.

Fortunately, my son doesn't read this forum.

I told him XBOX 360 will suck in HD.

Oooo, you'll be mad - I bought the same thing at BB around Thanksgiving at 899, and the price came down right after that, so they gave me a $100 certficate for the store. They called me on my phone to tell this. Talk about shocked!

Thats what my dad told me. But he bought a Playstation 3 instead...

We have a 50" Pioneer Elite. The price has pretty much not changed since we bought it, and the price is the same as on the new Elite Models.

I saw that, it was a different model. I have the PN50A450, it was for the PN50A400. I was mad because I paid $100 for an extra DVI input. That's the only difference I know of... but I did get 2 yrs 0% interest!

If you're in the market for a new TV, get to Circuit City quickly! Word is they will be liquidating by the end of the week. They have some great open box and closeout deals at most stores.

Saw a nice Mitsubishi 1080p 120mhz brand new in the box for $999. List is around $2700. You can grab a coupon online and get it a little cheaper.

When they start liquidating, a company buys their stock, marks it up to retail plus and then marks it down.

There's an open box Canon DSLR I may pick up tomorrow for 60% off. If you have a Circuit City near you, it may be worth while checking them out. Their open box units carry a full factory warranty that won't be affected if they go under.

I purchased the spousal unit open box. Good deal at the time, but maintenance has been a killer!

The decision will be made this week whether they will liquidate entirely or be bought out. There are apparently 2 potential buyers.

You should consider getting the Wii System. It's really a lot of fun.

The Playstation is the only system that plays Blueray discs if your interested in that.
