Cursed VW...
Mother ****er, it blew the oil seal today above the filter. What a POS, luckly my friend was following me so I wasn't stuck in a freezing car in below freezing weather today. As of right now this VW is the only car to ever leave me stranded.
I guess the seal blew about 2 miles down the road, because there was a 2 quart puddle at my friends condo I noticed when we went back. Plus a nice path of oil drips, I don't think there is any oil left in the pan... The POS car doesn't have a low oil pressure light, it has a zero oil pressure light. So it started blinking and beeping, thankfully before I got on the highway and I pulled right over and shut it down. Sounded like a diesel but those POS motors always make a lot of noise. I was very tempted just to drive it home, let it put a rod through its block, junk it, and drive the Mercedes. After half an hour of sitting in 5 degree temps I just might have, probably would have made it the 2 miles home. VW's and me don't get along.

Yikes. You paid what for this car though? What level of reliability are you expecting?
Today I drove my always there for me 300SD. Fired right up even though it was 4F out. 10 second glow and 1-2 seconds of cranking. Thats it.

That sucks! Only problems I've had are electrical. It was surprisingly easy to change the timing belt despite the apparent lack of space. I've come to look at changing certain sensors as regular maintenance.

What year VW was this? I remember this was a problem on Rabbtis in the 1970's, but it was mostly the oil filters that messed up.
Some filters have a built in check-valve. If they malfundtion it is the same as if your oil pumps' relief valve sticks. These older VW's could put up some serious oil pressure (up to 120 psi) and the seals on some of the oil filters could not take it and blew out. I remember a guy who bought a case of these for like twenty cents each at a 'managers sale'. Then he found out why the filters were so cheap. All of them had been declaired defective by the maker and they were supposed to have been shipped back for credit. This problem also killed a lot of Dodge Omins that used the same VW engine. Pooka |

1997 Golf, 4 banger. Its a commen problem with those engines, it has nothing to do with the filter. The oil cooler housing right above the filter blows out.

My $750 Subaru hasn't exploded but it didn't start at -2 degrees outside today. It has some autozoo bargain basement sparkplugs and the gap is probably wrong, or these cars need NGK sparkplugs only. Also, vacuum leaks and CA emission system. Then again my MB would explode if started at negitive degrees anyway
Maybe I'll stick that giant MB battery from my stored 300cd in the subaru

I only went like 250-300ft with it blinking and beeping, and shut it down right away. I doubt any damage was done.

You need a cheap beater Mercedes Gasser....
Its not made of tin, and last time I checked they burn oil, not puke it everywhere.... I really hope you were running some cheap oil in it, not Mobil1... I would feel bad about wasting good oil
