Who here has the Hyundai Genesis?

I remember reading that someone here had a Genesis....

Who was it? I have a few Q's...

$40G for a Hyundai? Fail.

Epic Fail

The doors on that Hyundai opened much nicer then any 'benz that was at the auto show, and shut just as nicely. The pull handles felt just like my W126, directly connected to the mechanism inside. Every Mercedes felt like the attachments were made with rubber bands.

The seats were very comfortable, the leather was quite soft and smelled nice, and the double glazing on the front windows only was an interesting touch. The only thing I didn't like about the car was that the rear windows didn't have pinch protection.

Who would want to drive a Hyundai.....

The doors on a W124 feel light and flimsy compared to a W126....strangely enough, the car feels pretty much the same inside (tankish)....despite such light doors.

The doors on my Dad's Passat feel better then the Benses on display there... I was hugely disappointed. The grille on the S Class was thin plastic too. Squeaks when you push on it.

Don't write off that car. It is very nice. Detroit did the same thing in the 70s...

A buddy of mine and I test drove a Genesis for shiz and giggles. It felt like nothing they advertised. They claim it to be better than a Mercedes and BMW and i'm sorry but no. I'd rather go spend the 40 grand on a real car like the c-class. Always that saying, Luxury features don't make a luxury car. Hyundai and Kia needs to realize this and build a car worth what they ask for it. Even if they did lower the price it's the name that kills it...

Modern Benzes are bloated enough with heavy junk, they don't need 200 pound doors to make it worse. A freakin SL is 4200 pounds now. A heavier door doesn't necessarily mean a safer car.

That said, I think the Genesis is quite an impressive car. It reminds me of when the first Lexus LS came out and undercut the W126 by 20g's.

I would definitely get one over say, a C-class or a Lexus ES. As long as they prove to be somewhat reliable at least.

Read, or listen more carefully to the ads. At least I have never heard them claim to be "better" than MB or BMW.
What they do claim is that they can out-accelerate a certain BWM, or out-brake and other model.
The claim to have more room than another luxury car, but I think they refrain from the "better than a ___" simply because it is so subjective.

Your final sentence shows you are a name-conscious buyer, and not objectively looking at the car itself. There is a Genesis forum. One of the threads asks what did you trade in for your Genesis. While there are a few Sonatas and Azera, there are a lot of Lexus, Infinity, and BMW owners out there now driving Genesis.

I want the Genesis coupe sooooo bad.

I wanted to talk to someone about reliability, and overall quality.

Hatterasguy 01-24-2009 03:27 PM

Its dumb, like paying $10k for a fake Rolex.

Go buy a Lexus is you want a FWD, soft sprung blah boat.

Johnhef 01-24-2009 05:08 PM

Hyundai needs a luxury line if they are going to sell cars like that. Something like "Lexus" or "Acura" or "Infiniti."

Also new S class grill is plastic for pedestrian saftey reasons. Doesnt make too much sense to me. The plastic grille hitting them wont hurt them but the 4,000 lb car attached to it will.

My heart goes out to the past BMW owners, the Lexus and Infinity owners won't know what they're missing because it was never there in the first place :P ..

Most people were dissapointed with how it performed, and the car isn't near what they're asking for it. Even at the dealership, they had tons and tons of them in stock and seemed very desperate to sell one to us. We're lucky we got away alive from that dealership. I'm not going to say it is a horrible car, but IMHO it's not worth what they ask.

How long is the genesis engine going to last? Can it keep up with lifespans of European cars? How long can the body hold up? I go with name brand cars because most have been around long enough to get these things right. And we all know this driving 25 year old cars and older, and they're still running like tanks! I'll admit to Mercedes being a bit expensive and BMW as well, and Hyundai winning, by coming out with this copy cat of a "luxury" sedan, but there is a big difference with quality. I'm sorry but I just don't think Hyundai has mastered that yet, especially if you go to Hyundai, test drive one and then go to Mercedes or BMW. You WILL see the difference i'm talking about. I wouldn't even trade my 85 300D for the Genesis...

I still hardly see any genesis on the road today... I think I've only seen about 7 of them. They'll probably end up just like the amanti, another big Korean flop....

I wouldnt trade my 1987 420SEL with 113,00 in for it. The 87 420 has just as many options if not more. Does the Genesis have self leveling suspension or front AND REAR HEATED SEATS THAT CAR MOVED TO ADJUST TO THE PERSONS OWN COMFORT LEVEL? NOPE! :D All that plus much more for under $8,000:D

redassag00 01-25-2009 08:44 PM

I drove it back to back with an E550. I liked it better than the E550. I'll wait till they show up used for 18 grand.

The 4.6L V8 is very smooth, and the rear wheel drive is nice.
