He's local to Colorado and ran a mega-church right down the road from Focus on the Family so he is at the center of the anti-homosexual movement in the USA. He also frequented a leather shop right around the corner from my house. It also looks like his church tried to cover up the relationship with the parishioner by paying him off. In short, he's a convenient tempting target.
