71-73 Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Mercury, Chrysler, Dodge - top line models...
Well, another poll (by request) of the early 70s cars. This will almost have them all wrapped up.
This poll is for the top of the line "mid-level" makes (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Mercury, Dodge and Chrysler). These were the top of the line full-size 4-door models from each of these makes. I may occasionally post the 2dr models of these. Buick Electra Limited: (1971) 1973 Electra Limited: the 2-door Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight LS: (1972) and the more luxurious Regency available later in the year.... 1973 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Regency: Pontiac Grand Ville: (1972) 1973 Grand Ville: (I was not sure which one of these would turn out the best, so I posted them all ) Mercury Marquis Brougham: (1972) 1973: Chrysler New Yorker Brougham: (1972) 1973 New Yorker Brougham: Dodge Monaco Brougham: (1972) 1973 Monaco (the 2dr) early 70s SEL... (I could not find any photos of the largest 1971-73 Mercedes sedans, but if anyone has any, please post). Since this is a MB site, I will not put the MB in the poll (I know it will get all of the votes). |

I think there should be a "None of the above..." or "Didn't flip my trigger then, doesn't do anything for me now..." selection.
I remember those cars when I was younger...didn't care for them...to me, it was begining to look like all of them were being cut from the same loaf of bread...each one just a little different than the other, but surprisingly the same... And the air-pollution garbage being thrown under the hood...you were starting to miss seeing the engine...or it was starting to look like the back alley behind an Italian restaurant...

Mercedes always has a fairly timeless design but of the "big boats" I'd have to choose the Buick. To me, it has the best overall lines.
There was actually another big car in the '70's that I can't remember exactly. I think it was a Ford product, two door. I saw one a while back and thought it would make a perfect "hot rod".

Grandpa had one...
He always drove Electra 225s. Got a new one every year as he did a lot of traveling for his sales job. I remember the ones from 1970-75 very well. The 71 was an awesome car. It was huge and powerful plus it was fancier than most people's houses inside! Same goes for the 72-76 only each year had more emission control crap and less HP. Then came the big downsize of 1977...

Thats about how I feel about todays cars.
Back then, these cars were "in", well at least the GM models. They were sold in higher #s in general. 1971 were high HP cars. 1972 was when they dropped because of added pollution controls, but still no slouch. I had a 1972 Electra with the 455 and it would roast the rear tires. I only did it once. Now I have a 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville 455 (like the one in the ad) and its no slouch either. It will move the 4600 lb car with ease and is much powerful than any of the 4 Mercedes I have ever owned. Quote:

Your dad had good taste in cars! I had a 1972 Electra 225 Custom in 2001-2002. I regret selling it. It had the rare fingertip wiper control option. One neat thing about these old cars is that back then, you ordered what options you wanted. You did not have to take "option packages" like you do now. I have even seen some of these Electras of this era without power windows, power locks and even one without A/C! (It was a northern car). Very rare to see one like this, as most were loaded. In 71-73, they made a base Electra, an Electra Custom and the top of the line Electra Limited. Mine was the Custom model. I sold it to a man in Rock Hill South Carolina for only $1800!
Here is a photo of my car in the driveway (does not even look the same now) in the year 2001. The interior was still showroom mint condition and the car did not have one speck of rust- anywhere! Quote:

I'd have to go with the Electra 225 as it's the closest to the 72 Caddy that I had. Which I'd have to say is the ultimate of that era.

I still have a 1976 Buick Electra 225, that was bought new by my Mother. I still drive it on longer trips, to visit my Sister, in Suttons Bay, MI. Drives in a manner in which I just enjoy, from a past era, like a pre WWII Packard, my old BMW 7 series or newer S Class Mercedes-Benz. They ALL have something special about them as a big roadcar, not a GT or Sportscar. A Corvette, Porsche or Ferrari, they are not.
It's something that you will never experience again. It is a very pleasant way to spend some time behind the wheel.
