Mr. Ratzinger has decided to rescind the excommunication of 4 bishops in the ultra-conservative anti-Vatican II group associated with Marcel Lefebvre. One of the bishops, Richard Williamson has made statements denying the Holocaust.
You'd assume the Pope, a former member of the Hitler Youth, might think that such a move is really bad public relations. Apparently not.

The NYT had an article arguing that the motivation for the readmission of these right wing heretics, (as opposed to the left wing theologians that Ratzinger himself worked to silence in the 80's and 90's) was to push the Catholic Church to the right. With these wackos now on the right end of orthodox Catholicism, Ratzinger's own conservatism will look positively liberal. Not a bad long term public relations move if you can handle the short term flak.
