I actually owned one of these back in college in 1969.

It's a 1958 Pontiac Super Chief. They had four versions in '58; the short wheelbase Chieftan, the longer "Super Chief" like this one, the more elegant "Star Chief" and the top of the line Bonneville.



My Super Chief was all white, with a huge gas sucking 386 CID V8 engine. I got it at an auction in Santa Barbara, it was a retired Santa Barbara County Welfare Department car that had been used exclusively by a social worker, the car was mint except the carpet around the gas pedal was tore up from her high heel shoes.

It had just 82,000 miles on it, and had been sold new at Hughes Pontiac in Santa Barbara back in '58 and was mint and always a local car.


It had gray button tufted upholstery, a wonderful old Eisenhower era car ("I like Ike") and I only paid $175 for it.


I was a broke college student when I got the car, and I used to drive it around town at midnight and go to all the gas stations, and drain the gasoline pumps into its gas tank.

In those days the gas pumps were unlocked at night, and there was a little bit of gas in the hoses, so if you hit several of them, you could get a few gallons of gas for free!!!


At the end of the summer I sold the car for $200 to a teenage girl in San Rafael. On the test drive she had it up to 110 mph!!!
