Seeking opinions about Rollo Mo

http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&rls=en&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=rollo+mo&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&ei=82qpSZKMMMH7tgeApu37Dw&sa=X&oi=local_group&resnum=1&ct=image Bteween Ft Leonard Wood & St Louis.

I'm considering relocating for a few years. We like rural living so we'd like a rental outside of town. Probably not have Mrs B with me for a year or so. My youngest will be in her senior year in HS. Mrs B & I both grew-up military brats and so we are fully aware of the emotional toll taken on moving high schoolers.

I'm not looking for stats or tourist bureau info, Google works fine. I'm looking for perceptions on quality of life. Stuff not quantifiable.

Thanks for your comments.

B

"Rolla" MO? I've never been there, but have heard of the college parties.

i was born in waynesville and lived in dixon which is about 30 mi from rolla. was just a pup then so things are prob alot diff now but if you like the rural living and some absolutly beautiful country side then jump on it.and yes you might even see a hillbilly or two but dont worry most cant bite very hard.just change your name if it is hatfield or mccoy! anyway i say go for it !

For any given large, complex, hard-to-understand, expensive problem, there exists at least one short, simple, easy, cheap wrong answer.

I have overnighted there many times as it is about halfway between where I live now (Texas) and where I grew up (Frostbite Falls). The town seems nice and modern, and the surrounding area is very nice. Being a kollege town means it has some plusses and minuses that would need to be weighed.

I had my basic training at Fort Lost In The Woods so I don't have many good memories of the area! The terrain was pretty, but it is butt-cold in the winter and extremely humid in the summer.I suppose it much more tolerable if you aren't living in a tent.-Scott

I live in Springfield Mo, One hundred miles away. My son went to UMR and we have spent some time in Rolla; even though it is a "College town" it is boring and has kind of rural back-woodsy uneducated feel about it.
The University is an engineering & mining school, not very big and it seems to keep to itself somewhat.
My daughter is taking engineering here in Springfield and will probably finish up her degree in Rolla...she is NOT looking forward to living there.
But If you like rural, then you will be at home. OH Yeah! As a plus, The folks are very friendly and helpful in most of rural Missouri.

But you will find yourself driving to St. Louis or Springfield 'to go to the city'.

This is all my opinion, your results may vary.

I was a finalist for a job in Fayette, just north of Columbia in the late 80's. I've been really glad over the years that the position went unfunded. Cost of living was very appealing but I think I'd have shriveled up and died if I'd have had to live there long term. I was surprised at the racial division of the town. The person giving me the tour of the town followed a convoluted route avoiding the black sections of town, ignorant of the fact that I'd already scoped everything out on my own.

If Rolla is your work locale, then I don't have much input, but if you're gonna be commuting from there to St Louis or a similar distance, then the daily drive will seriously impinge upon your quality of life. About five years ago I lived in rural Nirvana on 20 acres of absolute perfection...but, the 35 mile commute sucked all the joy out of my daily existence. Never again. I now walk five blocks to work

I don't think that commuting between Rolla and St. Louis is an option. It's quite a bit more than 35 miles. You would be driving for six hours a day or more.

"Rolla", not "Rollo", forgive my blunder. I knew better (heck, I got it right on the google maps search) but a demonic possession overwhelmed me.

I agree about commuting between St Louis. I drove a rental from the STL airport to Rolla and there is NFW I would do that on a daily. My commute right now is usually under 5 minutes so even 15 minutes would seem a waste of my life.

Though I currently live in the Bible Belt, I'm in Roman Catholic country and aside from the odd priest behaving like mutants, it is definitely not like living in non-Catholic country. I dunno, maybe Catholics are tolerant of minor sins. Whatever. I wouldn't much relish the idea of being amongst committed teetotalers. OTOH, I am increasingly intolerant of too much tolerance, if that makes sense.

MO is the center of Assemblies of God country. Their denominational headquarters is in Springfield. I don't think you'll have to worry about an excess of tolerance in that part of the world.

Good grief, I've lived in STL for 25 years, and would sooner die than move to Rolla, Jefferson City or Columbia. My darling daughter goes to school at Mizzou (University of Missouri Columbia) and swears it's the most backward place she's ever seen. Her first year there she was shocked that seemingly the whole town went deer hunting, including the girls. Rolla is worse, it's a smaller community and the University there has a predominantly male student body...bunch of engineering geeks if you believe the rumors.

So, it definitely sounds like a step up from South Loseranna then ....

Pretty sure he can handle the humidity, but that winter's going to be brutal.
