HP pavilion bios update needed

anyone here have a copy of the latest bios update for an hp pavilion dv5-1002nr? I need to update the bios on this laptop I am working on for a friend and firefox is saying that it cannot connect to the server to download the updated bios( f.23) and internet explorer wont even connect to support.hp.com

this isn't my laptop so I have no idea what the hell is wrong with it, just its overheating. I want to update the bios before I crack it open and see if that solves the issue.

oh, i hate hp laptops as well

nevermind I have to go through the help desk on the desktop to do it.. and it tells me to run health check or w/e that crap is to even see if it needs anything updated. I can't update anything at my will... wow...

If its overheating its probably a fan/heatsink plugged up with dust and dirt issue, not a BIOS issue.

You need to take it apart and clean out the fan/heatsink and ideally re-attach it with a better thermal compound than they used at the factory.

Also download Speedfan to see exactly what it going on. But puters should be cleaned every 6 months IMO.

speedfan has been running on it. I am guessing its just clogged with dust. If that still doesnt work I will then put some better thermal compound on the heatsink/processor and go from there. I think I have some arctic silver laying around somewhere

i've got this laptop.. again and im in the process of gaining access to the heat sink/fan.

well according to hp's guide the fan and heat sink come out as one.. wonderful.

it uses a copper pipe to transfer heat from the processor to the fan which sucks the hot air and blows it out.

to gain access it requires complete dissasembly of the laptop. So far I've got the keyboard and top finisher panel off. The sony viao I had, this is as far as I had to go to get access to the mobo and heat sink.

I think I'm going to put it back together and call her and see what she wants to do. I can see inside the fan and it isn't that dusty, some canned air will probably clean that out. But as far as going in deeper, I dont have the time this weekend to do so.

here is a little comparison

my dell inspiron with a dual core processor is running 102F at idle(average of both cores)

the HP is running 169F at idle with a single core.

the HP peaked at 193F before I shut it down to work on it.

I would've tried some canned air, before tearing the thing apart.

I didnt go far. Once the keyboard was off and I couldnt access the heat sink or fan I said.. im not going any further.

my viao was cake. remove the keyboard and it was all right there. This thing has tons of crap shoved into the case and poor ventilation. The fan is 3" away from the CPU and uses a copper pipe to draw heat away from the CPU...

Proper thermal compound and heatsinking is everything. It should go lapped heatsink-artic silver-CPU. I've 'revived' a couple of computers that wouldn't even boot by applying proper heatsinking.

My old laptop kept dying of videocard errors, turns out there was no heatsink at all-just a bare piece of sheetmetal aluminum touching it. Copper and JB weld solved that
