Anyone ever had CHIMAY?

I just bought a sample pack at the distributor:

I'm looking forward to trying it with dinner tonight.

Quote:
This package presents the complete line of Chimay Trappist Beers with a traditional goblet. An ideal gift to discover the taste of Chimay.

CONTENTS
1 bottle of Chimay Red Cap 11.2 oz 1 bottle of Chimay Triple 11.2 oz 1 bottle of Chimay Blue Cap 11.2 oz 1 classic goblet 11.2 oz

CHIMAY RED CAP
Referred to as Premiere in the 25.4 oz bottle, Red Cap is the first beer to be brewed by the Trappist monks of Chimay. It is noted for its coppery, attractive color. Topped with a creamy head, it gives off a light, fruity apricot aroma produced by the fermentation. Its taste imparts a silky sensation to the tongue. Refreshing with a light touch of bitterness. Ideally served at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F). Alcohol Content: 7% ABV. Best Flavor: Within 2 years.

CHIMAY TRIPLE
Referred to as Cinq Cents in the 25.4 oz bottle, Chimay Triple has a typical golden color, a slightly hazy appearance and a fine head. Its aroma is the result of a pleasing combination of fresh hops and yeast. The beer's flavor offers fruity notes of Muscat and raisins, which gives it a particularly attractive aroma, complementing the touch of bitterness. Ideally served chilled at 6°C to 8°C (42°F to 46°F). Alcohol Content: 8% ABV. Best Flavor: Within 1 year.

CHIMAY BLUE CAP
Referred to as Grande Reserve in the 25.4 oz bottle, it was first launched as a Christmas beer. This strong-character beer has a fragrance of fresh yeast and a pleasantly light, flowery rosy touch. Its relatively dry flavor uncovers a fine caramelized note. A perfect balance between fullness and slightly bitter aftertaste. Ideally served at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F). Alcohol Content: 9% ABV. Best Flavor: Improves with age.
The sample pack is a good price at $15 since a case of CHIMAY is $116 - $120 depending on the variety.

Trappist ale....mmmmm! As far as I'm concerned, the Belgians invented beer. Everyone got Trappist ales from me for Christmas in '08....Chimay, Pirate(sp?) etc...there was a great selection at Specs.

Don't chill it too much.

I saw a show called "Three Sheets". The host travels the world drinking beer from different regions. He went to Belgium and talked about the Trappist ales.

Supposedly, the Grande Reserve (blue cap CHIMAY) reaches a level of perfection after 5 years.

They take 3 years to make initially.

I make home brew and it takes about 20 days until it's ready to drink. The longer I can let it age, the better it gets. I've been able to let some age almost 4 months and it was great, much better than drinking it right away (which was still very good).

Yep, had it at the source. Made going back to Amsterdam and touring the Heineken Brewery kind of melodramatic. 12oz bottle in NOLA costs about $5 apiece at the grocery, $8 for the tall bottles.

Oh yeah... Chimay is ridiculously good. I brought a case back last year from a deployment to Germany, and hope to do so again this spring if the trip comes up again. It's not nearly so expensive at the liquor store at Geilenkirchen NATO Air Base!

Shoot, for that kind of money, you can get a good single malt scotch!

How about Lindeman's framboise lambic? My wife loves the stuff... The Belgians certainly DO have a knack for making good beer.

Yeah, its $10 for the 25oz bottles in Williamsburg, VA. Taxes on booze in LA are a lot less than most places. Chad got a good deal--I'll have to look for that on my next trip South.

Belgian frambroise lambics (raspberry) are the only 'girly drinks' I like at all. Occasionally I'll have one instead of or in addition too (let's be honest) dessert. Have to keep the corks to keep up with the names so I can remember what to order

I heard about those on the same "Three Sheets" epsiode where I heard about the CHIMAY. I saw some of them at my local distributor as well so I'll have to give them a try. I believe they have strawberry and apple at my store.

The "Three Sheets" program is pretty good. I recommend watching it. There are 3 seasons and 2 DVDs per season. I've been getting them from Netflix.

Me too. I have tried the cherry, peach, etc... but the framboise is the best by far. And Lindeman's has been my consistent favorite of all the brands. Tasty stuff!

Dangit, you guys are making me thirsty now. I have a couple of good IPA's in the 'fridge, along with a Kolsch and an Erdinger Kristall Weiss. Choices, choices, choices... which one do I drink tonight?

I couldn't wait to try one. My work is done for the day and my MIL is currently watching my kids.

I decided to try the red cap CHIMAY. WOW!!! Sweet, smooth, creamy and hardly any bitter. I like this one.

Nope. I don't get out much, tend to be a cheap ba$tard and am very envious.
