Airplane/fishing gear question?
I'm going to FL this Saturday, and was planning on driving until plans changed, now I guess were flying.
Anyway whats the best way for me to get my fresh water tackle box and 6ft 1 piece G Loomis rod down there? Shoud I even try or should I just give up? My concern is that my favorite fresh water lures are about 30 years old, so losing them would be a big deal. Checking them is not something I'd want to do. I wonder if UPS is an option? I don't want to spend $50+ shipping this stuff back and forth though. I could 2nd day air this stuff down for a $$$. Can you bring lures on your carry on these days? I was thinking about bringing my reel, and the important lures carry on, and buy a 2 piece St Croix down there, my uncle can bring the rod back up in his car. Plus its an excuse to buy a St. Croix.

I could just order one and have it deliverd to grandma's house.

If your tackle box is not too big just carry it on (remove any gutting knives etc first)
I did this a while back, they tried to hassle me for having too many carry-ons, but I knew women are allowed to have a purse in addition to their carry-ons, so I told them it was my "fishing purse" and they let me take it on.

Either a St Croix or a Loomis fly rod? That doesn't seem like much of a decision to make.

I'd send it FedX...That's how I go when I'm heading to Ohio for vacation. send all my clothes, and keep just enough in the carry-on for one night.

I prefer Orvis fly rods, I have had good luck with them. I think I'm going to buy something down there, and my uncle can bring it back in his car when he comes back in a couple of weeks. I'll probably get a cheap Ugly Stick, can't go wrong with another workhorse. I can bring a reel carry on so I'll bring a good reel for it.

No they are not, they are great for the money but no Loomis, Sage, Orvis, or T&T. There spinning rods are pretty decent though. Not a Loomis but you get 80% of a Loomis for less than half the price.
My favorite fly rod is my Orvis Superfine 7ft, 4wt 1oz. Its perfect for the tight streams I love, I can drop the fly exactly where I want it. I'll never get rid of it or replace it, that one I'm taking to my grave.
