Woot built the new computer myself and saved a lot of money! And wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

congrats. I've built 14 at last count. It's satisfying to fire it up for the first time and have it work.

Yeah the really amazing part is the markup on crappy parts the main computer retailers (see dell, HP, Acer ect...) use...I mean really stripped down motherboards and terrbile airflow. And if you need to buy parts go to newegg.com...they have great shipping and customer service.

Case: NZXT tempest
Motherboard: Asus P6T
Ram: 6 gigs Corsiar platinum
PSU: Corsair 850Watt
HD: seagate 640gig
DVD-ROM: Samsung
Graphics cards: 2 EVGA GTX 260
Processor: Intel core i7 2.66gig

It is quite easy and there's a sense of accomplishment when it's done. :)

How much a similar machine cost off the shelf?

Question, The motherboard specs say Maximun Supportable Memory is 25g. Is that RAM memory? Cause I see you have a 640g hard drive in there.

No I spent 1,500 a similar machine would cost around 2,200-2500 depending on where you go. Yeah its 25 gigs Ram.


I think I have to go home and reapply thermal paste to the cpu. its running hot might have put too much on. :(

Did you build that as like an extreme gaming machine? What OS are you running? It would have to be a 64-bit OS to use more than half the ram you have in there....

Same here. :D I've been doing it for about 10 years....its somewhere in the 150+ built....and many many hundreds repaired or upgraded.... :)

There's a difference between "building" a computer and "assembling" one. :D

Now you have to learn to become your own computer manufacturer customer service representative so you can call yourself, place yourself on hold for 45 minutes, and not resolve the problem.

You mean there's no DIY kit for making your own CPU's out of aluminum foil, a tack hammer, and a green sharpie? :D

Kids these days got it easy . . . before CPUs there were op amps, diodes, timer chips, transistors and failing eyesight from reading Sams Photofacts or the Motorola cookbook. :cool:

Now they think they're building computers because they mastered the Lego art of plugging things in.

The Core i7 runs cool so that is most likely the case. Do yourself a favor and buy a aftermarket heatsink and get the temps even farther down. Check out Noctua, they make great heatsinks and the fans on them are extremely quiet, where you can barely hear them.
