First canoe trip of the season

First canoe trip of the 09 season today. It was a joint trip sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Canoe Club, Poudre Paddlers and the Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak club. 54 boats paddled the South Platte river from Evans to Kersey. It was running about 400cfs. Beautiful day. First picture is mislabeled. That's the put-in in Evans, CO. Other two pictures are my wife in the Yellowstone solo and my daughter standing beside the Tripper.
Canoeing is become a geriatric sport around here. Looked like they opened up the nursing homes for a day on the river.

Just move up the canyon to the Mishawaka. Won't find the geriatric crowd there!

Oh crap! Yeah you guys use flotation in your boats.

Hey let me teach you a new word. You've probably never heard it before.

PORTAGE!

Yea, canoeing in the north vs western rivers is night and day. IIRC the last time I went canoeing in Michigan we carried the canoes more than floating in them. We took a case of beer between 2 canoes and crank 4 of them....at the end.

I fish from the canoe sometimes, mostly when I'm up in Kuan's territory. I've never fly fished before and most of the fishing on Colorado's canoeing rivers is fly fishing. Two dams yesterday, both were short portages. Nothing really required flotation yesterday but one of the groups sponsoring the trip always requires flotation on any trip.
The canoeists I know who are capable of running Mishawaka and the upper Poudre, are all over 50, and some are in their mid 70's. Most of the younger generation are kayakers.

Especially if your upside down, some people make it to the other side.
