Because there wasn't enough chaos already.....

..... ma's cancer, Ed's unemployment, buying a house for parents, renovating whole house for parents in a month (and still not having found a plumber), moving parents, getting our place ready for the FHA inspection at the start of June, me having to go back to China, 2 cats with crystals.....

Took Jack the lovable and insane 5 year old border collie to the ER vet last night cause he started vomiting (after being somewhat lethargic and a bit off his feed). Turns out his kidneys are effectively shut down or darn close, so he spent the night there getting fluids to try to start them back up and transferred to the specialist this morning. If we're lucky, he's just got a real bad kidney infection and stomach ulcer.

ER vet here was as sweet as can be.. we can see why they got one of the best of DC rankings even all the way out here in Frederick. They went real slow and easy with the pup, so he's being nice to everyone, which is good cause they're keeping him for at least the next 3 days.

I hope things get better from here on in. I have been your animal situation before and it is difficult. Wish you well.

Hope Jack gets back to his old ways soon. Sounds like you brought him to the right place.

Good luck with the rest of it, makes my to-do list seem much more achievable. If you were in CT, I'd lend a hand. Not a plumber by trade, but I've only ever had one sweat joint leak(out of many thousands, and it was a 2am frozen pipe repair job)

same thing happened to me when I was moving, turned out my Malamute thought packing peanuts tasted good and ate enough to shut down his digestive system and kidneys. pumped him out and he was yellow for a few days but he was ok after a few weeks.

Thanks for the kind thoughts folks. Doc says one of four likely causes: cancer, toxin (really uncommon these days she says, plus Jack is with one or both of us constantly cuz he is fear aggressive so not much chance he ate something we don't know about), infection, or "slow degenerative process" brought on by immune system defect, congenital defect, or "we may never know" defect. He upchucked a sizable blood clot early this morning, suggesting he has a pretty substantial ulcer - which could be a side effect of the kidney failure, or could be the cause of the kidney failure.

Tests this afternoon. Fingers crossed.

****. Damn, ****, double damn and ****.

"Ultrasound showed that his kidneys are really banged up." "Stomach wall is 2-4 times normal thickness." "Creatine levels haven't budged in spite of the aggressive treatment since last night." "If the creatine levels don't improve in the next 36-48 hours he'll likely never regain enough kidney function to stay hydrated at home."

Bottom line is that whatever caused the damage has been at work for years - so not likely an infection or a toxin. Hope to find the root cause so that if they can jump start his kidneys they'll know how (if) they can prevent more damage. Not looking promising.

****. I just learned how to hurt a few years ago. I'm not sure I'm ready for this kind of test.
