Cute pic of a day in the life...

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking.

We’ve currently reached our cruising altitude of 41-thousand feet, and expect no turbulence for the remainder of the flight.

We’re going to turn off the fasten seatbelt sign at this time, and invite any small children who may be having a hard time napping in the cabin, to come up to the flight deck and try out or cute and cuddly first officer, who... at this time... has nothing better to do than lull our little passengers to sleep on her lap.

(thought it was cute. I don't plan on leaving it long)

Moment is tense, you can't see too well and he can grope the First Officer.

I am wondering, are usual turbulences visible from the pilot's perspective? To me it always looks like nothing but clear air out there.

I noticed, on a regular commercial airliner, the motion at the tail is more constant than is in front of the wings. I wonder if pilots even feel average turnbulance in the cockpit.

Yet when turbulences hit hard, the wing area of the tube seems to transmit impact the most.

Well… As far as dimming the lights, I’m going to have to go with what Aklim said.
So I can grope the FO.
I can’t say that I’ve ever had a better reason to dim the lights for takeoff.

Now, on the commercial aircraft, two things happen in relation to your Q. The electrical load(s) on the engine driven generators are often desired to be at minimum for max TO power.
And, the engine bleed air will be shut down so as the engines have all the air available to develop max power. This you will notice as the fresh air blowers in the overheads will shut down and/or get a bit warmer (as the A/C pacs are temporarily shut down, sometimes off).

Well… There is such a thing as “Clear Air Turbulence” (Nasty air pockets). The sky is crystal clear. You see nothing. And yet you’re being tossed around. This is usually over mountainous regions, or anywhere where air masses moving at different speeds collide. Like jet streams.

The best way (Just about the only way, actually.) that you will know about them is reports from other aircraft ahead of you. Either by them, themselves. Or via flight following communications from the ground.

Yes, the pilots feel it. Maybe not quite as bad as the aft or over-wing box area of the cabin. But not too much less. Sometimes with the small stuff. The aft cabin can shake a little more do to the tail surfaces. And these little shakes may buffer out and not be transmitted clear up to the cockpit. But for the most part, the crew can feel it.

Our Citation X and Shelbys 400A are so small and ridged, that they pretty much shake and jump around the same from one end to the other.
The good news is - We fly higher and can often avoid a lot of what the commercial jets can't.

I happen to endup flying across the Andes frequently. This route also features Mexico City and/or the Gulf of Mexico area. There is always a lot of shaking going on.

Cruising along the Pacific Coast is rather pleasant, if compared.

Here a view of Greenlands South Tip and a little speeding contest going on way above Canada's Thunder Bay area:
(may have to use the magnifying feature to detect the passing aircraft)

Nice shot.

Pretty much – anytime you’re “glassing along” and come up on a mountain range, you can expect the smooth ride to be over with. Might not be too bad, but the air is usually moving around.

Seen that area a few times.
Depending on our direction and Customs inspection stop, we head into Reykjavik Iceland for fuel quite a bit. Then, out, over and down when heading east.

Well, I can tell stories about turbulences and thunderstorms at 30K+ feet. Usually I am dieing several hundreds of deaths during those hours ....

At FL300, we fly the scopes like a video game.

So... I guess you’re not up for a hot summer glider ride with DJ then.
Nothing like getting sucked up into a cell, putting on the O2 mask and latex gloves, and jumping out at 20K+ under the anvil. One hell of a blind elevator ride.

That is... unless you find the hail.

Edit: I guess I should make clear that I don't mean "jumping out" of the aircraft.
