The idealism of the old series. The sense of true community. The female Viper pilots. Think about it: They were under martial law, and no one noticed, or cared.
The new series, which I admit I never gave a fair audience since the only episodes I watched were the first one, Razor, and the last two, was too belligerent, dark, mean spirited and soulless. The original made me want to join the crew. The remake made me want to change channels. DISCLAIMER: When the original series came out I was 14, very open minded and idealistic. When the remake was done, I was old and cynical, which could be skewing my perceptions.

I did enjoy the new series.
But I agree with Eric it tended to be very dark. I also didn't like the "Angels", just seemed to far off. I still think the ending was lame, kind of what I see in a lot of shows nowadays. Build up, good story, good characters. Spend lots of time. Then, oh we have to end this OK done.

2. "...under martial law, and no one noticed, or cared" Thats what I liked about the new series, it was very real world. I'm sure if a group of people were under martial law some wouldn't be happy about it no matter what. And on that real world sens of the series my favorite bit was the fact that the 50 year old Galactica was suffering structurally from years of abuse. (Any Star Trek Voyager fans know if they had any episodes with anything similar?) 3. Dark, yes, mean spirited, yes but I wouldn't call it souless. Again it was very real world. If you got shot in the head, your dead, if the nuke goes off, it goes off, no "It was just a bad dream" simply put, the good guys don't always win.

The new Battlestar was my favorite show on TV, and I'm devastated that it's over. The old series was just a cheaper fluff type of show, not near as sophisticated as the new series was. I enjoyed the "darkness" of the new series. They were dark times.
If only the new series had Borellian Nomen.......

I liked the old series UNTIL the new one came out. The old series with its cheesy special effects and really bad acting was fun to watch back in 1978. When SciFi reran the old series before bringing out the new one I was surprised at how bad it really was. Some of the story lines like "Count Ibli" and finding lost colonies all the time, but leaving the people there behind when they left just were not believable. Of course they were trying to bring "Star Wars" to TV without ripping off Lucas too much
The new series was very I would say realistic. It looked and felt like these were real people stuck in a hopeless situation and doing their best to survive. It was dark, but the whole situation was dark. The diminishing resources, equipment breaking down, people dying, food running out were all very believeble.

At a certain point it is unfair to compare movies or TV shows from basicaly different eras. I only watched parts of episodes of the new one. They had a marathon a few years back. Those episodes or of what I woacthed of them were slow and boring to me. I thoug they were trying to hard to show the angst of the characters, but it was closing in on being to melodramactic.
The old series was cheesy. Just about every show back then was. I did see it in the past few years or so. About how and what I remember of it. It did come after Star Wars, as did Buck Rodgers in the 21st Century (even more cheesy, if that can be said). I think the major flaw in the original was pandering to the kids. There were episodes where people were starving and stuffed into ships, while other lived laviously. People did die, even main characters, like Jane Seymore (still looks hot). Yes, the original was pale compared to Star Wars. Here we are talking different budgets. Both were cutting edge for thier media.OK, Star Trek was on par or close in some instances. Star Wars and Jaws had a huge effect on the Movie industry and culture for years if not decades. Saturday Night Fever had a huge effect culturally (for better or worst), but not movie wise.I don't think till the Matrix, that special effects took another leap. Star Wars was a Quantum leap though. True old to new comparisons can be a bit unfair but I would rather watch I Love Lucy then most of the crap that networks put out these days. On the other side of the coin there are some things that we will probably never see on tv again as networks strive for complete political correctness.

The characters in the new show were seriously messed up, more real than in 78, but I dug the old show. I had the hots for Sheba when I was 18, but Number 6 was pretty hot, until I lost track of her various incarnations.
Do we not include that wondefule show, "Galactica 1980" in our poll????? It had the cheese of CHIPS and Lost in Space combined.

I still vote for the new BSG. It seemed real as if it could be happening to us here and now. I especially liked the 1970's tech base but with FTL drives... They needed to re-adapt from the robotics of the Cylons. It was when they forgot about the threat and went back to more 'modern' networking and computers that they got in trouble. By the way... I liked Athena and Cassiopeia from the old show and The #8s and Dee from the new one...

I think it was about 10 shows. And remember the space kids and Dr. Zee? I had the major hots for Robyn Douglass, still do. I remember the episode with Wolfman Jack.... yikes.

If 12 entire planets full of humans had been reduced to a few thousand survivors, and they were trapped out in space in metal cans, frantically on the run from a relentless and murderous enemy, things would be QUITE dark! In reality, knowing what I know about human nature, things would probably deteriorate into conditions and chaos far WORSE than those depicted on the show!.... My opinion is that the new BSG was one of the best written, best directed television shows ever, if not THE best. Brilliant concepts, brilliant story lines, stellar character development, multi-multi-multi-layered plots, believable scenarios, attention to detail, well-done special effects..... In fact, for several years it has been pretty much the ONLY show on television that I can even stand to watch. Otherwise I stick to late-night Discovery Channel, History Channel, TLC, etc... I'm a self-admitted sci-fi dork, but even beyond that, it was just SUCH a well-done series. It was even well-ACTED for the most part, which NEVER happens in science fiction! (William Shatner, anyone?.... hahaha) I think it was a masterpiece all around, destined to live on amongst the classics of sci-fi. I'm bummed that it's over, but I'm also glad they didn't beat it to death for season after season, draining the magic from it. I own it all on DVD, and I'm sure I'll watch it many times over. Mike

I'm curious to see how the upcoming prequal and Cylon side stories are going to pan out.

I stopped watching it awhile ago, I probably should start again and watch the entire series.
It was pretty good, but IMHO not as good as Stargate.
