Best time to purchase flight tickets?

Is it true that buying them months ahead is a lot cheaper? What if you buy a month or even a week or two before departure? Will price magically drop by then? Also, what are some good online places to buy tickets. I've looked at Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity. The prices offered don't differ much, but it seems Orbitz is a bit more. Heading to OK this summer. Anyone there?

Don't know where you live but if Continental is a choice every Tuesday at 8AM CT they post all there flights that are undersold (capacity) at sometimes "whorehouse" prices. All those flights are FRI/SAT departures with SUN/MON returns (or varation of). We have done overnighters to IAH from JAN for $29 RT. Makes for a pretty cool weekend if you are spontaneous.

Depends really. I can tell you that I just purchased a ticket Paris to Guatemala round trip last week, to travel mid june thru mid July and I got it for Euro 550 all taxes included. This is about US$750. Normally this ticket costs Euro 1100 to 1200. In fact I was going to use miles but this offer came up so I decided to save the miles for December. It is for my GF's daughter who studies law in Paris.

Also, two weeks ago I was checking the prices to visit my parents in South America, Chile. Round trip purchasing the ticket 3 weeks in advance at the time, was about US$600, which is also a great deal, normally this is also about US$1200.

So basically to answer your question, during this time where people have cut back on traveling, I think that the airlines, looking at short term travel, and the the flights are not full are discounting the airfares.

I would keep your options open, the summer season is about to start and when the airlines look that flights are not full, they will begin to discount.

Also, believe it or not, check out the airlines web pages for sale offers. I was looking for a ticket for my sister to travel Madrid to Guatemala and all the usual discount online sites were at Euro 1,000, but I checked Iberia's website and found the airfare directly for Euro 634 for same dates of travel.

I've used Expedia with great results and usually purchase a few months in advance. Main thing is if you have a problem you can get an actual person on the phone to speak with.

I was looking at tickets to Omaha to visit my brother on the 6th. From last Saturday to today, the same flight has gone up $60.

Yapta.com is a nice service. You can track multiple flights schedules and it sends an email whenever the price changes.
