houseflies.........arrrg!

I believe I may have posted this here years ago, but is there any way to make my yard unappealing to house flies?

I pick up after my dog every morning when he does his duty, and even spray down the residue with bleach to be safe.

The problem is my disgusting neighbor and his five dogs that go unattended for days and I am damn sure he doesn't pick up after them for several reasons:

He is a cop and is rarely home. 3 days a week maybe. I don't know where he and his family go, but they go.

The area that his dogs relieve themselves is over the fence next to my tiki bar and the smell is pretty obvious.

You simply cannot go out there and attempt to sit down and have a burger without being attacked.

I plan on speaking to him when I see him, asking him to please clean up,the smell is killing me,etc.....

Does anyone know of anything I can do to minimize them coming to my yard? Incense, voodoo, lures, repellents that actually do something? My yard is my favorite place to be, I hit the bag, swim, play with my dog, read the paper in the morning and it sucks that I can't enjoy it without worrying about disease carrying house flies.

Suggestions?

Chat with your neighbor, The COP (Why does this sound like a losing proposition already? ) to see if he can see your point clearly...otherwise, you are DEFINATELY going to have some issues...reasoning doesn't seem like it's going to have an upper hand against testosterone, gunpowder, doughnuts and a badge...but then, again, you could get lucky...

You feeling like buying a lottery ticket? The odds are more in your favor and the tickets don't have friends that can make life interesting...

The other option (this doesn't even sound good... ) is to contact the City's Health Dept. or the Zoning board to see if there are limits on how many dogs/yard˛ you are allowed to have without special permits or conditional use permits. 5 animals (especially dogs) in a city enviroment seems like a lot...but I've seen and heard of worse...

Otherwise, gas-masks for your guests would be new norm for your backyard 'til the dogs die, the neighbor has an "incident" while on duty or you pull the plug and move...

My sympathies are with you...

Good luck...

Heres what you need to to my man. Go to Home Depot and get one of those really big grill spatulars and go up to the dog crap and make sure you put proper pressure on the upper part of the handle and fling the dog crap onto his house or swimming pool.

That is not a bad idea.

There is a fence separating the two houses, I'm gonna at the very least, put a half bottle of wine out there and kill as many as I can.

Can't call animal control on him, I have an illegal pitbull and all I need is for him to report me.

I'll chat with him later and see what comes out of it.

I still don't understand why a person who is in the house maybe 3 days a week needs 4 or 5 dogs.

He has a habit of helping out friends in need. some family needs a place to stay for awhile, he takes them in it seems like they bring a pet with them, which inevitable stays with him when they get an apt that doesn't allow pet.

BZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!

Then invite him over for a cookout...you sit upwind of the smell from his dogs and have him sit in a comfy chair down-wind from the smell...and explain in some agreeable way of you two maybe helping FIND a solution to the smell-problem and it's associated side-bar problems...the flys...

A "pooper-scooper" service is one thing to look at, but on a cop's pay, that might be a bit more than he can afford...but then, again, he's got 5 mouths to feed besides his own...someone might have to give up something to gain something...

Then, the area where his dogs have been doing their business might need more than just a rinse-down...so just picking up may not be just a simple matter at all...

You just may have a backyard Hiroshima...beyond repair and salvation...you might have to consider moving if you ever intend to be able to head to your back yard in anything warmer than 40°F (flys don't move/fly too well when they're THAT cold!) or doesn't smell like the local Humane Society Dog Run Pen... Oh wait...you're in Miami...doesn't get that cold down there, does it? Sorry!

Good luck...and BTW...make the Pitbull legal...give him some English lessons...

I have come up with a pretty decent solution. Bleach! spray the crap out of the area near his fence(about 25') where the dogs do their thing and it masks the smell considerably. I also have a hose end sprayer that has insect killer that helps with the population.

My yard a times smells like a bleach and or spectrazide. Yummy!

I bet if you went to a zoo and bought some lion crap and put it near the place the dogs like to crap they would be deterred......(or would that be deturd) Sorry couldn't resist.

'course the lion crap might not smell too good either.

Save your self a lot of trouble by going to the city code enforcement officer or the city health inspector and let them do the work. Your name will not be listed as the complainant.

I peeked over the fence yesterday and noticed that his above ground pool is covered in slime.

Can this be harboring flies? I know its' a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

I also got a can of some backyard fogger thing that works pretty well for awhile.

I can't seem to find the right attractant to lure them into my empty gatorade bottles.

One thing you can do is make another part of your yard apealling with fly attractant/trap from TSC. They work well on farms.

Have your lawyer send him a letter threatening a public nusiance lawsuit. Hopefully, the cop won't plant an ounce of heroin in your glove box, and will instead be a more considerate neighbor. If the prospect of a long unjust prison sentence does not appeal to you, being one who lives in the one of the buggiest parts of the US, I would mount three or four high-quality electric bug zappers along the fence line, making sure they are prominently set for him to see.

Befriend him, empathize with his screwed up cop schedule, and you being a dog lover too, offer to go over and check up on his dogs & give them attention; to make sure they food, water etc. & then just clean up the dog messes yourself.
Maybe when he sees you have been picking up the nasty after HIS dogs, giving attention to HIS dogs, stealing the affection of HIS dogs; he'll try to save face & embarresment by paying more attention to HIS dogs......Or not.

But at least you would be getting the source of the flies cleaned up.

I like the dog repellent idea too.
