[Rant]
Having just finished The Forgotten Soldier I made my way to the huge and well-stocked (sarcasm) Carson City Library to find something new to read. I'm trying to work my way through a fairly mainstream reading list, but the library only has about 1/3 of the books on the list. Grrrr!

they should be able to get your books from any other library in the state. I know FL's library system can do just that.May take a day or two but they do it alright.

I am friends with too many librarians.
They are all amazingly smart and thoughtful people. One told me of some of the questions on her final test (to get a Masters degree in library science...please don't laugh =) and the questions were stupidly beyond me - I am cool with librarians.

Remember the libraries are funded by local governments and schools. Governments are more likely to see the library as a unnecessary expense - I mean, what do the local councilmembers get out of it if their library has 5 more books in it this year ?. I'm sure that its possible for a library to affect the affluence of a neighborhood, but not in a way that your average .gov official can see.
Local libraries also often have children's programs, and if there is anything that PPOD (Peachparts.com Open Discussion =) can agree on, its that kids need to learn MORE - and a library is a great place to do so, even if they have books by Rush Limbaugh and Al Franken =)
I see the local county library getting pared down a lot in the next 30 years.
which is sad, because they are all free and often full of knowledge for someone of any stripe (my local library has a few auto-mechanic subscriptions that I'd otherwise have to pay for...kinda nice =)

What do you expect? Carson City is a small city out in the middle of the desert.
In Fl you can get a book from any library in the county. Maybe you have some kind of sharing system there?

When all else fails books can always be bought. Maybe Amazon.com?

Anyway, no offense. I went through Carson City once on my way from Lake Tahoe to Reno & thought it was a cool city. Got a shirt from the Harley Davidson shop.

I think a lot of is has to do with the fact that much data is now gotten from the internet. My wife just did her Masters in Nursing a couple years ago. Has yet to set foot in the library. Anything she needed was on the web. Some are in special publications or something to that effect and she got her friend who was a student with access to email her a copy of the article.

Mrs. MTI upgraded to a newer Sony e-Reader and can now download books that they have in their system from the state library. They digitally de-activate from the PC in 21 days, but we're checking to see if they stay on the device beyond that time.

Might make getting a library card in larger metro areas worthwhile.

The Marines reading list is very similer to my reading list, some good books on their.

The Killer Angels was great, highly recomend.

I like to build up my library and books are cheap so I just order them from Amazon a few at a time.

Some big names on that list, and good reads.

Carson City is also a county. And we only have one library. I can check out books from any library in the state, but if I'm going further than Douglas, Washoe, or Lyon Counties, I'll end up spending more in diesel than I would to buy the book I'm looking for from Borders or Amazon. I didn't ask about whether the local library can get books from other libraries shipped in. Maybe I should.

Anyway I'm going through the ones that are available and am just starting Breakout about the Chosin Reservoir in Korea.

I went thrpugh there, quite a list. I would add: On War, by Clausewitz; and Jimmy Doolittle's Autobiography. I happened to meet one of the survivors of the Doolittle Tokyo raid, who is 91 and came to visit one of the local generals. I had his book and got an autograph.

The guy was very humble and made the comment that the real reason for the raid was to get a few planes in to do little damage. But they scared the Japs so much that half the fighter bomber fleet was kept in Japan after that to protect the mainland, a huge strategic blunder by the Japs.

Which is why we did it.

On War is in their look closer!

I think Guderian's and Mellenthin's books should be on the list. Guderian literaly wrote the book on tank tactics, than used the book and refined it with combat experiance.
