Federal Government Funds New $21 Million Airport for Alaska Town With 46 Residents

Would it not be cheaper to offer to move anyone who wants to leave and say deal with it to those who stay?

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/25/federal-government-funds-new-million-airport-alaska-town-residents/

An interior Alaska community with just 46 residents is in line for a new $21 million airport.

The state received a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to build the airport at Takotna 17 miles west of McGrath and 300 miles west of Fairbanks.

yeah, but don't forget...this is the federal government...so it must be OK..
you are needlessly concerned...it'll be fine...it's the government...they always, in the long run, make the best decision for something

Probably Palin's doing......part of her reduction of wasteful spending she was talking about during the elections. Typical. Will they build a road to link the airport to the road to nowhere?

It is interesting to see everyone's predudices comeout. Noone has any FACTS about why, or what procedures were responsible, but the anti-Palin crowd has assumed its her doing. At least get some facts before you blame somebody.

Her and the AK Sen/Rep certainly have not been very vocal against it now have they?

At least Sanford was speaking out against the stimulus and putting his miney where his mouth was.

Looks like another Fox "hit piece". One thing that is not mentioned is what those 46 people are doing up there. Perhaps they are pumping a million barrels of oil a week, for all I know. The article is mysteriously short on all kinds of information. $21 million is nothing these days, we got interstate bridges in Texas that cost more than that, there are no roads in this part of Alaska and it costs a fortune to build them there, perhaps $21 million for an airport is a bargain, but then of course, you'd have to suspend your desire for everything to be negative these days in order to consider that.

Yep, just Googled it up, the place is only reachable by sled dog, right in the middle of prime old field.

$21 million seems a bit much to lengthen an already existing runway....besides aren't most "runways" in Alaska unpaved strips of gravels/grass? To top it off, 46 people right? Its not like they have to land an A380 on this thing, if the demand for goods/transport is so high then fly in an extra Cessna every week.....

(Its a shame you can't use AN-2's/AN-3's in the US, that sounds like a much cheaper solution to me)

How did you reach that conclusion? In the article, it clearly states:

At 3,300 feet long and 75 feet wide, the new airport in Takotna will be almost twice the size of the old one, Maggard said. The current airport is 1,700 feet long and 45 feet wide.

The new airport will have lights and will be at a new site because the old one is built into the side of a hill. The current airstrip has no lights. Maggard called it "very substandard."

What did they mean by "substandard"? Why won't it work for the 46 people?

You ever try to land an unassembled oil derrick on a grass runway?
