About 6 weeks ago, while fielding a hard hit ground ball, I slid on the wet grass ( no cleats) and did a MAJOR hamstring tear, left leg knee to hip. I have been nursing that along, and the healing has been slower than I like ( I'm impatient), but steady. My age is a factor here, as I am not a young kid, anymore; 60 years old (sigh).
I have not progressed to where running is natural and easy--more like a jog, but the gait felt a little odd. My guess is that some scar tissue was interfering, and that more time and exercise would take care of it.
Last night, while warming up for another game, I ran a short jog to the outfield, and then though about trying a sprint ( laughable term) in the infield, as in running the bases. On my third stride I felt two sharp "pops" below my left knee. The pain was about like a charlie horse, but without the knotted muscle that comes with the charlie horse. I can bear weight on the leg, but the pain increses as I stride forward on my right foot, and push off the ball of the left foot. The pain seems to be proportional to the angle of my left ankle.
My questions:
Any ideas of what I did?
Any ideas on treatment?--I hate to go to the doctor only to have him say, " Its a soft tissue injury; it'l heal with time". However, if there is some real reason, I am not adverse to going to the doctor.
Thanks, all.

Here's what you do my man, pm aklim, him and his lovely wife have been counseling me with my recent medical/surgical problems. They are caring people and will help you. I hope I haven't hurt aklims reputation here, but he and his wife are GREAT people trust me, I know. :)

No, I think I'll just use your favorite annoying tack and challenge you to prove your original statement ("to keep exercising - playing baseball, or whatever - not a good idea, guy.").

You've probably injured more than just the hamstring, I don't know what position you were in when you slid but it could be knee ligaments (ACL/PCL) or menisci involvement as well. If the pain is proportional to the angle of your left ankle then it could also have caused problems on your lower leg not just on your hamstring. The ITB (a band of muscle responsible for locking the knee in place that originates from the hip and inserts to the lower leg) also could be damaged. These affect gait.

If it's any consolation, you were right to ask for help online, however to actually diagnose the problem you should see a good qualified physical therapist. We can only guess as much as we can but to actually physically see your leg and the extent of the damage is the best one can do. A doctor can only tell you so much but a physical therapist (or a sports therapist) is trained in lower extremity diagnosis and treatment. Not sure if you can head straight to the PT's, sometimes a doctor has to refer you. Look around and see if you can consult a PT directly.

The above comment about "RICE" (rest, ice, compression and elevation) is VERY good and coming from a physical therapy background that is one of the important things you need to do immediately after the injury.

There are specific techniques to isolate leg injuries and treat them individually or as a combined mechanism. Your assessment and a therapist's assessment may be different, hence the advice to seek proper treatment.

I hope your recovery goes well. Go easy for now, you don't want to injure yourself more than you already have.
