Town bans bottled water.

I'd say it's about time someone took a stand against the extremely wasteful product known as bottled water. IMO this is worth commending.

Ideally I'd like to see bottled water (in disposable bottles) and plastic shopping bags banned everywhere. Those are two things I've voluntarily gone without with no harm to me whatsoever, but a lot of people still use them without any concern over the enormous amount of waste these things produce.

Would it be better if they were drinking diet soda out of plastic bottles?

If there was to be a ban on plastic packaging of all sorts, I would be in agreement, but I don't see anything worse about plastic-bottled water than any other plastic-packaged product.

Personally, I've always thought that the guy who figured out how to get people to buy stuff in a bottle that they had previously (and could still) enjoyed for free out of their faucets, must be a friggin' genius.

I'm thinking of marketing plastic bottles of air. Maybe if I can design a nice-looking label and a catchy TV commercial . . . .

I agree, I meant all disposable plastic bottle beverages. I think water is the most common liquid to be packaged in plastic bottles. I don't even drink soda, so I'm not intimately familiar with how it's packaged, but I think it's mostly aluminum cans.

It is pretty amazing. I think it's the notion that bottled water is cleaner & healthier than tap water that keeps the sales strong. But I have read about studies that showed bottled water is not as clean as people like to think, and in some places it's no better than tap water. I think the best solution is installing a water filter at home if tap water isn't satisfactory. And if one must drink bottled water (for safety or vanity reasons) I'd say use the big, refillable bottles rather than the disposable ones.

I agree with that too.....bottles should all be only glass or aluminum. Both 100% recyclable to infinity. In Germany you pretty much do not see any plastic packaging.....most of it is glass/cardboard/metal.

And that commercial is the most scary thing I have EVER seen in my life.

I use paper grocery bags or bring my reusable one....drink beer from bottles or cans, pop from cans, and water in a cup from my Brita pitcher.

I'd never buy bottled water. I can drink water till my kidneys explode from the tap and it'd cost me less than a single bottle of bottled water.

Perception, as they say, is everything. I head that Deer Park water is bottled in New Jersey and comes right out of a municipal water system. I prefer to take my chances with tap water. I have been known to drink water out of open wells, creeks, and even the ocassional ditch if I was thirsty enough.

So if I'm on the road and thirsty I can't buy water, but I can buy a coffee or a sugary soda (in styrofoam yet)?

If they ban bottle water how the heck am I supposed to carry it around in my truck?

I always have 2-3 bottles in my truck, I get thirsty working. Although I do refill them many times.

Aquafina comes out of the tap but is purified by reverse osmosis which removes nearly all of the contaminants including the fluoride and chlorine. I'd rather not drink out of plastic, but when I'm traveling, it's preferable to drinking what's found in most municipal water supplies.

When we did culinary competitions we brought our own water. Serious, partly because we didn't know if the local water contained stuff which would cause our ice to cloud or cause or gels to break.
