w126 with a roof mounted bike rack?

Has anyone ever seen a W126 with a bike rack on the roof? Latley I have been thinking of getting a diesel wagon to accomodate a couple of mountain bikes, but after thinking about it, I dont think I wanna sink my money into two cars. I was thinking a roof rack cause I think they look cool, but I dont want to tear up my car too much. Its far from perfect, but still.

Why not just get a Thule rack? That's what I use on my Jetta, and the trays also fit on our Saab. The Thule racks are very well engineered and have yet to mar my finish any. Looks like you'd need the 369 foot pack and a set of load bars, plus the bike carriers. Maybe watch ebay for a set?

Do you think holes would have to be drilled?

I would imagine so since there is no stock rack. Plus, aren't the roofs hoods and trunks aluminum (at least the sheet metal)?

No; I think the 639 is a rain gutter mount. I would NOT drill holes in any car to mount a roof rack, and I don't think Thule makes any that require drilling. I have never owned a W126, so i don't know how the Thule system mounts, but I can vouch for Thule's overall build quality and design. Do you have a bike shop nearby, or a big sporting goods place? I'm sure they can explain how the Thule would mount up. You can also buy online and save quite a bit.

I saw a W126 with Yakima Racks that hooked onto the gutter above the door, and gave the person both ski racks and bike racks.

That's exactly how I believe the Thule would work. I have heard nothing but good things about Yakima, either, but I have no personal experience with them. Thule, on the other hand, has treated me very well for a LONG time. Their customer service is great, too. I think either would be a good choice.

I looked at both sites, and they both didnt say anything about drilling. I kinda would like the ones with wind deflectors.

Both companies make compatible fairings. Those are definitely nice to have.

I'm gonna take my bike into a shop maybe to so ill check it out. Wait, ill do that when my car gets outta the shop. My riding buddy has a Honda S2000 so its my car for the designated bike hauler. Its a pain in the butt to dismantle the bikes and stick em in the trunk and back seat. I don't need my leather even more torn up.

In a pinch, you could also get one of the trunk-mount carriers, too. They have rubber or foam pads so as not to rub the finish. I prefer the rooftop mounts personally, but I'm sure the trunk mounts work fine. I see them frequently enough!

Both brands have pro's and con's. I've been told by a bike shop owner that both brands are now owned by the same company - which is why parts are mostly interchangable now. This wasn't the case 10 years ago.

I've seen plenty on w126's and someday plan on putting one on the roof of my wagon. Neither will require any drilling.

Nah. Ill pass on the trunk ones. Part of deal about the roof top one is they look so much cooler. It gives the car a rugged utilitarian look. It may have once been a luxury car, but I don't consider it one now. I plan to keep this car a while seein as it has my money captive, so I might as well make it work for me. Besides, who else pulls up to the trails in a 23 year old mercedes?

A friend has a roof mount for his 123, he complains of excessive drag, i.e. lower fuel mileage, but he travels a long distance.

Does the wagon have roof rails or just rain gutters?
