Would you choose a life like Madoff's?

Leaving the criminal issue aside, if you had a choice of a modest life and a quiet retirement, or a life of wealth and luxury which culminated with incarceration at age 71, what would you choose?

tankdriver 07-14-2009 07:56 PM

Depends on how modest. I would like to be able to get things and do things for others without having to even think about it. For myself though, I have very little I really desire. I'd take the money, but wouldn't spend much of it on me.

Hatterasguy 07-14-2009 08:03 PM

B, I'd live like a king and die shortly after 71.:D

I want the houses, boats, jets, cars, vacation, stuff, etc.

Plenty of people live a very good life and don't have to steal to do it.

MTUpower 07-14-2009 08:34 PM

I wonder how AKLIM will answer? :D

The Clk Man 07-14-2009 08:44 PM

I would prefer to retire in a quiet life doing what I have been doing for the last 25 years which is helping others at my own expense. Hey, you can't take it with you. :)

MTI 07-14-2009 08:44 PM

Doesn't that presume that Madoff's decision included concious knowledge that he would be caught? Most criminals believe that they can get away with it, no?

tankdriver 07-14-2009 08:46 PM

It's a hypothetical.

I wouldn't mind prison at 71. I wouldn't live much longer.

THE ARS 07-14-2009 10:13 PM

Are you sure, Tank?

You'd rather spend your last days with people who can't wait for you to die?

You need to give this a little more thought, brother.

PS - **** Bernie Madoff! Peace of mind is everything to an elderly person and this ****ing rat stole it when he stole their money. I hope you burn in Hell Bernie, you piece of sh*it.

I don't think he lived a very good life as most of us know life he may know the difference between Osetra and Beluga but if he had any morals at all he was lying in wait for his downfall....which is not a way I would like to live. Most normal people get a brief satisfaction out of cars and other material items but its the warmth of the bed and self satisfaction that keeps normal people happy.

t walgamuth 07-14-2009 10:25 PM

I would choose a quiet life with honor.

He has estranged his whole family over this. What is life worth with no friends and no family and everybody in the world knowing you are a huge fraudulant crook who ruined lots of folks financially over the desire to out do other investment advisors.

Having a few old cars honestly earned and a loving family is worlds better in my mind.;)

If this means I could have the "rich life" while NOT breaking laws of course I would choose the rich life. If it does not mean that, or that I knew at the time I was screwing others to have that life, then no I would not choose it. With my heart and Marfan syndrome I doubt I'll make it to 71.

amosfella 07-14-2009 11:05 PM

I'd take the rich life. Working to be able to acheive this. Might make me have to leave my home country though.....

THE ARS 07-14-2009 11:59 PM

Trust me when I tell you that you don't want to die alone.

It would be a very sad way to end your life.

Tom

everyone dies alone. only the one dying can make that particular journey.... The others around you just watch you begin....
