Im thinking about buying a new old mercedes

I was rummaging through craigslist the other day, and I found a listing that said: 60 mercedes, runs, needs work. The car doesnt look rotted out, but I was worried about the "needs work" part. the car has a beautiful shape, I was enamored by the fins. Are parts hard to find on a car this old? Expensive? I dont want to bite off more than I can chew. I am only familiar with the m103 engine, and the w124, and w126 bodies, But I am very mechanically inclined.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. By the way, he was asking 3,000. Is that a fair price?

I wouldn't want to even guess an offer until I could put my hands on the car. His lack of description leaves much to desire. Take a look http://www.peachparts.com//shopforum/showthread.php?t=255912 at a Forum member that is selling a car - notice the honest detail?

I may want to take a look at it. I have been looking for an older sedan to add to my driveway. ( my wife will probably leave me.) If its in halfway decent shape, I may make him an offer.

Remember, Mercedes isn't a car, it's an addiction.

you couldnt be more right. My first benz was an 89 300e. w124. Paid 1,000. bucks for it, invested many thousands more. Still my favorite car. Almost 200k and rides like new.

Bought 89 300se w126 for 3,000 a couple of years ago, only did regular maintenance. 92,000 dealer serviced miles.

It's very strange how much $$ you can throw in these cars even with DIY's and bargain hunting on parts. Oh well, guess everyone has to have a passion.

Get in touch with user name "SirNik84" on here who just got one.

He lives in Sacramento.

He has just bought a '60 180 Ponton, too. It had sat in a field for years, after the owner refurbished the dashboard, rebuilt the engine and lost interest in it. It needs a total resto.

I saw it, recently but it was late at night. He had traded an old W115 240D automatic that did not run, for it.

Anyone considering a restoration "project" must eventually come to grips with the decision "Is the finished car going to fufill me enough to offset the monetary and emotional costs?"

If a fintail does it for you . . . is there anything more to ask?

I thought you'd given up after the "Dealer screwed you for the last time" episode.

The dealer screwing me was a valuable lesson.

Nobody loves your car as much as you do.
Nobody cares about your car as much as you do.

Had I not been simply lazy, I would have found the problem myself and not bought that absurdly priced lock cylinder.

Give him a paper cut and squeeze some lemon in there, while you're at it.
