Any banks offering free checking?

and I don't mean just a for a few months only after opening an account but FREE forever. Better yet, any banks right now giving $100 out for opening a checking account? I've been thinking about opening a separate check acct. for petty spending, online purchases, ebay, and what not instead of using my credit cards for such things. Ebay now won't let you place an auction if your paypal isn't linked to your bank accout. I don't trust linking my main bank acct to paypal or using it to buy anything online even though my debit card has MC status. Last time I was inside Citi Bank to make a credit card payment the teller informed me about their free checking. I may go back and check on that. I'm trying to stop using my credit card since they are jacking up the APR. Also trying to pay the balance off so I can start thinking about my R129 SL purchase :P I can buy one now, but why when I owe money to banks. Gotta be responsible.

I believe my account with USBank is totally free.

My checking account is free if I carry a balance $500 or more. And I get interest on the balance.

Everybody has free checking, with some kind of minimum balance. I have a checking account through a credit union, and even the checks are free. I think it's a $1000 minimum there.

^ Unless you can get a student account :D $0 minimum, overdraft protection, nice stuff.

I had a USBank one for a while. Like already said, most people are doing free checking. I have a separate one for online purchases too, with a check card. It's free and doesn't have a minimum.

Here's a few

Bank of America has it, but they suck. Washington Mutual had it but, but now that it's Chase they don't, unless you already had an account with Washington Mutual previously. Wells Fargo has free checking. Bank of California has free checking. RaboBank has free checking.

I hate banks. But that debit card sure comes in handy.

Just about any credit union. I don't know why anyone would not use a credit union.

Farmer's and Merchants State Bank as a checking product called rewards checking. It is great.
Qualifications:
1. 12 debit card transactions per cycle.
2. 6 minimum online payments made from account per cycle

Benefits:
1. 3.5% interest rate (find that on any standard savings account)
2. no minimum balance
3. foreign ATM charges are reimbursed up to $25 per cycle

I love it.

Truer words have not been spoken.

I have three bank accounts. They are all free. I use USAA, BBVA Compass and Wellsfargo. No minimum balance for either.

The bulk of our working capital (Not to mention insurance and investments) is with USAA. Awesome bank.

We also like Regions Bank, for our “around town... daily use... small...” checking accounts.
