New TDI's anyone?
My friend is interested in a new car and wants to get a new TDI, he currently drives some beat up pos dakota pickup truck he got for free from his dad. He wants the new TDI since he saw that my SDL gets pretty good mileage and he likes the idea of it. But cant afford a new E320 CDI lol.
Plus the govt just poured another 2bil into the c4c like its nothing so I am thinking we might be able to use his pos for the TDI so he can get $4500 off the price of it. So, anyways.. what do we, the mercedes forum think of the new TDI's? He isnt going for a Jetta Sport Wagon(I would though).. but just base model Jetta TDI with I think an automatic and ipod adapter in Electric blue. lol I'm going with him to the dealership later since I am the car guy and know a thing or two about the TDI's but nothing about the new TDI.(looking them up on TDIclub too) |

I'd really like a Sport Wagon. Actually I'd really like a diesel Passat just because they're a little larger but VW doesn't offer an oil burner in it yet (AFAIK).

im looking up the dealer invoice and all of the other nit pick things so I can help my friend get it for a good price and not get raped.
it qualifies for a $1300 tax credit as well which is cool.. So he's looking at $5800 off the thing already( C4C and the credit) and negotiate for as low under invoice as possible lol. I've got the number for three other VW dealers in the area and I am ready to dance. |

So far the new 2.0 Common Rail engines have been good. Long term the particle trap, etc is still unproven in my book. Plus I don't like the move to 30 weight oils, but I guess they're ok?
The new engine really drives nice... more like a very torquey gasser then a diesel of old. the torque comes in later at like 2200 rpm (torque peak is 1900 on my 99.5). I'd go for the 6 speed manual transmission... the DSG has many many moving parts and requires $200 in fluid every 40,000 miles. (The DSG is the automatic on the TDI... no torque converter, instead you have two manual transmissions with 2 clutches run by a computer system and fancy software.) -Jason

There are no paddle shifters on the TDI's DSG, only on the higher trim sporty cars. And no you can't just retrofit them, the computer is different, and the computer lives inside the transmission.
The DSG isn't a bad trans, they've used it since 2004 in the New Beetle. You just have to keep after it. It also won't be as smooth as a regular auto... no torque converter. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad... but if I want to I can do a better job of being smooth then the DSG at low speeds. Now under load it's another story... unbelievably fast and impossible to feel shifts! At least on the new cars the EGR is taken after the particle trap, so there's no soot going back into the intake plugging things up. The new glow plugs are amazing too... 3 seconds of glow time when it's around freezing out! The 2.0 even has pressure sensing glow plugs! Too bad they're $150 each

yeah I was reading up on the DSG.. I wish I had known that my friends F car has a DSG transmission then I would have gladly taken him up on the offer of driving it.
The DSG is a nice feature and rivals the manual, the only thing the manaual has going for it now is lower operating and replacement cost should it fail. With a very small increase in economy over the DSG due to parasitic loss. |

We have an '06, and it is quite nice. It came with the option 1 package (for a few thousand more, I think) which I probably wouldn't have ordered if it weren't that way on the lot.
Ours is a 5-speed manual, and the clutch is a bit weird but you get used to it quickly (I stalled the engine three times on the test drive). You have to let the pedal out slower than on other manuals that I've driven, but if you let it out at the right speed, it doesn't matter if you're pressing the foot feed. It has plenty of torque at idle RPM. Ours has the 1.9 PD engine (BRM, I think). I don't know what engine comes in the '08. We just got it over 50K miles, so the factory warranty is done. It has needed no service other than maintenance so far. IOW, zero defects. Mexican assembly plant, Polish engine, and I forget where the transmission came from. But they did it right. That engine does take some expensive oil though, and I don't let it go farther than 7500 miles between changes (factory spec is 10K). |

Joe,
You might recall the black 06 TDI, that I showed up with - my g/f has over 20k mi. on it now, gets 600+ miles per 14.5 gallon tank on a regular basis, and hasn't had anything go wrong. (there is a broken power window switch, but as to who/what broke it, is unknown) I have just over 8k mi. on my 09 TDI (6-speed) and am very happy with it. I don't get the great mpg that my g/f does, but I still get at least 500 miles per tank. Our engines are different, our routes are different, and our driving habits are different. I would be tempted by a CC TDI in a couple of years.

I think it would make a fantastic shooting car! We could do penetration comparisions between steel core M855 5.56, steel core 7.62, and the new 5.56 Black Hills Mk 262 Mod 1 round the special forces are using.

my friend and I looked at few and the only one they had with black interior with no sunroof came in grey so thats on his list to consider should financing work out and or c4c comes back into effect. but I will say the car is roomy, comfortable, has tons of power(car guy tossed me the keys to the demo model(the adaptive tranny was like confused lol guess thats what happens with the demo model but I was having fun with the DSG).. it was very quiet.. I'd so buy one of these if I had the income |
