Dogwood stem cankers

Anyone have experience with those? I'm talking specifically about red-twig dogwood bushes. The cankers appear as blackened dead areas on some stems. Can they spread and infest healthy stems or are they mere symptoms of heat/water stress from being in pots at the nursery too long? I just bought some of these bushes and I'm wondering if it was a bad purchase. They all have this issue to some extent. The nursery says it's just sun scald and nothing to worry about, but they could be telling me BS.
