AAA Towing.....

I'm probably going to buy a Land Rover Discovery some time this week and I have a quick question.

I have AAA PLUS/RV service which gives me up to 100 miles of free towing.....can I use this service for a car that I have just bought from a private party but have yet to register?

In my experience, they don't even ask about ownership. You can tow any car.

I really hope that they don't complain....also because its permanent four wheel drive it will need a flatbed truck......

If I call them should I do it "last minute" or just call them the day before?

I'd call them on the spot. I was told 30-45 minutes, the guy was there within 20. I told the operator on the phone what car it was, and where, the driver showed up, we pushed it to where it needed to be to load it, picked it up and dropped it off. Verification was never an issue except on the phone. I've only got the base membership, too. 7 miles I think. But, if there isn't anything wrong with the car, you might call and verify they do it.

And around here at least, all non-flatbeds are actually obsolete!

When buying a Land Rover its a good idea to line up towing, have you selected your mechanic yet? :P

Funny but I know where your coming from. :)

Even with the SDL i've needed AAA towing a time or two. Once when the starter motor seized and a 2nd time for when I stupidly ran out of fuel 1/4 of a mile from the station (It was on an uphill in a snow storm so there was no chance of pushing it)

There are a bunch of those high end range rovers in the boneyards here-must be the heat ( and the ALLUUMINIUM).

There's a guy around the block from me that has one, I heard it idling today, the engine sounded like crap! It looks pretty new too.

He's planning for that reality, which is the topic of this thread, and I'm sure by now he knows more about the nature of LRs than any of us.

They are beautiful, capable Rigs during the short duration between shop visits.:D

Nope --- AAA will not tow an unregistered vehicle. It is only for emergency roadside assistance.

If thats the case then the question becomes how do I register a car being bought from a private party while the car sits in their driveway......

Depends on the tow driver. I had my MGB GT towed out to a farm for storage, and it was unregistered at the time. Had tags, but they were long expired. They really don't look very closely, in my experience. In fact, I didn't even know current registration was a requirement for a tow until I read it here.
