S500 coupe ... is this car unusual?

I went to lunch yesterday with my dad and his friend from Virginia, who has a beautiful 1995 S500 coupe. I'm just curious about how common this car is, as I've never seen one that looks just like it. It's a 2-door W140, but it has the standard W140 grille and headlights ... not the CL front end. I'm not that crazy about the CL front on the W140, but I love the regular look ... and this coupe looks sportier than the W140 sedan. This one's definitely not up for sale anytime soon ... my dad's friend really likes it; he bought it six years ago and has kept it up nicely. Anyone know why this has a regular front end and all the other S-class coupes I see from '95 have a CL front?

I think I've seen a couple around here before.....they're probably fairly rare. I don't really see regular W140's all that often either....if I am out driving a lot during the day I might see one or two W140's.

Yesterday I saw a W140 S600 at the grocery store. It was quite a machine. And it didn't like its owner, he was standing there pointing his fob at the trunk for a good 40 seconds as it kept blinking a red LED at him, then finally went green and opened the trunk. How stupid.....my $35 self installed remote locking can have my whole car unlocked and truck open in about 3-4 seconds tops.

Not all advanced technology is worth it. :D

The CL replaced the S500 coupe in name around '93 I think. Thought they were identical.

Nomenclature;Same car, 3 names.

1993- 500SEC and 600SEC

1994-1997 S500 and S600

1998-1999 CL500 and CL600

The SEC/CL/S-Coupes are always and always will be pretty rare. In a good month i'll see one of any year or model. I really like the look of the W140 Coupe but wow is it big! I'm going to hold off for a 560SEC.

I forgot there was a W140 SEC. I start to like the W140, they are getting cheap now.

The S500 coupe my dad's friend drives has a front that looks like the photo attached. Only his is a two-door. It doesn't have the front like the one in your pic, fulcrum.

Is that where the rest of the payment go's?

Ahh well then yes that car is unusual. Looks like he has the front end of the sedan on the coupe. I know people have done the reverse with W126's (Putting an SEC front on a SEL) I've never heard of the same trick being pulled on a W140. The picture I posted is what the CL's are supposed to look like, here is another for good measure.

Also I just noticed.....I think those are French euro lights...again I didn't know that they put them on W140's as well.....here is a US spec 140 sedan.

Now that I look at more photos, I wonder if he at one point just had the hood and headlights replaced with the sedan features. Now I'm second-guessing myself, but I'm almost positive the headlights and grille don't look like the C140.

Snap a few pictures the next chance you get and we'll pick it apart for you. :)

There's a blue one here in town and I pretty sure it had a similar fascia to the pictured coupe but now I'm second-guessing myself. :) I'll have to swing by and double check.

Nice cars, but never really cared for the W140 coupes. The W220 coupe always looked a lot better to me.

They are all very big cars, the W220 coupe is as long as my truck.:D

They are rare because they are one of the most expensive Mercedes you can buy new, and one of the most expensive to own. You need a sturdy check book to sort out the suspension on a W220 coupe.:D

The C221 coupes look fantastic! Today parked in the center of town I passed a black CL63 AMG with dark tints and very nice Brabus looking wheels. A $150k CL63 would look very good parked in my garage, very good!:D

Just saw a W220 CL600 with a saggy front suspension driving on the 10 freeway.
