How Do You Get Started on Skype?

So, how does one get started on Skype? Leaving video capabilities out of it, what are the hardware and software requirements? Is my standard 3-year old desktop (HP with sound card and speakers, but no mic, running Comcast broadband) ready to Skype by just logging onto to some Skype website, is that the way it works? Does it "ring" your computer when you receive a call, or how do you know someone's calling?

Your computer should be fine but you will definitely need a microphone. I downloaded Skype awhile ago but a local Kmart was closing so I broke down and bought a webcam.

My wife is up in Michigan and went to visit a friend that has Skype also. I called them up when it showed my friend was online. It was great to be able to see my wife and talk to her on the computer.

After using it for the first time, I am hyped and want to get all of my firends and relatives on Skype also.

This is just like the old Sci-Fi movies we saw as kids, where the guy is sitting in his room (futuristic looking room BTW) and hears a ringing. He goes and hits a button on a box and, wham, there is the person on the screen that he is talking to.
