hip replacement as out patient?
I had a fellow tell me at the Y the other day that he knew people who had had hip replacement as an out patient.
I cannot imagine that ....does anybody here know someone who did?

No. But I have a friend going in for a three level cervical fusion next Monday as outpatient. Seems dicey to me. I stayed in one night with my cervical spine surgery.

Unlikely as "out patient" since the risk of post op complications can be fairly huge; factor in that most hip replacements are typically done on way over AARP membership limits.

Gone are the days when we could rely on generosity of the nice folks at the health insurance companies. With them it's always, "Oh, you prefer to stay another day or two in the hospital? Sure, tell them to send us the bill."
Back to the original post, though, I would be surprised that a surgeon would allow a hip replacement patient to go home the same day. Doesn't that surgery carry a high risk of pulmonary embolism? For that reason alone, I think they would want the patient to remain flat on his or her back for a while after the surgery. On the other hand, I am all in favor of getting the h*ll out a hospital as quick as you can. Bad things happen in hospitals. |

Google minimally invasive hip replacement or ask a doctor.....Preferally an orthopedic surgeon, I am astounded my how inept some GP's are these days. I told a client GP about my disc replacement and he insisted that I was confused with fusion.
My multi level disc replacement could have easily been out patient and in maybe now. Last edited by Medmech; 09-21-2009 at 10:48 AM. |

And they'll throw in a "cat-scan" if the thing isn't rabid, it's been de-clawed and "fixed"...there's nothing worse than your "cat" dribbling rabid-foam, from its mouth, on your open wounds. It would then "suck" to be you!!!

MM..
If I'm correct I think the CC was among the first of a dozen or so hospitals in the US to participate in the initial trials of artificial discs in this country. This was maybe five or six years ago. I'm just guessin here, but not all hospitals offer it and certainly not all orthopoedic surgeons know how to do it. (You know, the old guys.) |

I find it "interesting" that my posts "seem" to be getting shorter as the weekends get longer...
I'm wondering if this isn't some form of "censoring" that is acceptable to the majority on this website...or at least the "Obamanites" that have reign on all that type and pontificate here... Would anyone care to, at least, send a PM to those that are "shortened" (as if I need to be made any shorter than the 5'5" that GOD has granted me the priviledge to possess?), explaining the reasoning for editing out major portions of postings so that the original post now represents some sort of incoherent "rant" or "blurb" that has nothing to do with what was said in the original context?

Good question. I don't think I would do it. I talked to him a lot. Insurance denied coverage to have the non-fusion I had done in Pittsburgh. Said the surgeon was outside of the network even though we have the same insurance and they covered mine as in-network. His surgeon says that three level cervical disc replacement can't be done, hence the fusion.
