Log splitters

I spent much of my spare time this summer slicing a bunch of fallen trees into rounds. Now I have a pile of rounds about 10x15x6 feet in area. And it is time to split this mess. In the past I did it by using a good hand powered splitting maul, but I can’t do this any more due to failing body parts. So I've been looking for a gas powered log splitter. They all look about the same to me, and the cost varies from about $1300 to about $2300.

My plan is to buy one, use it for a few weekends and then sell it. Any recommendations on good gas powered log splitters?

I checked and the rental places want $60-$80 per day. It will take me about a month of weekends to get through this mess. If I buy it will cost me a lot less $ and also it will take a lot less time and effort schlepping the splitter to and from the rental place every weekend.

Got neighbors or friends that use wood? You could share the cost of the splitter and even help each other.

It is a great idea but in the neighborhood, historically, if someone buys one everyone else leaches. I have neither the time or desire to endure that. I just want a reliable tool that I can get rid of quickly when I'm done with it. After this season I won’t need to split more wood for about 3 years.

You could hire a kid in the neighborhood.

Try to find something on Craigslist. I have bought all kinds of stuff from there and also sold a few things.

Uh; no. I just thought it was a funny photo.... This kid was in the news and flexing on TV shows. He looked like a likely candidate for splitting logs...

I thought you had pasted a kid's head on an adult's body. That is WEIRD!

That was my thought. I used an electric years ago, I've forgotten almost everything about it - it wasn't mine - but it worked fine and would have to be quieter than a gas powered.
